The loss of land is minimal when put in perspective next to the loss of a friend.
It sounds like the family appreciates you generosity and that may pay off when they go to sell the land. They might pass along your name to the new owner and you could get an opportunity to hunt the land.
Either way, you did the right thing by helping the man out and by respecting his son.
