checking in deer late. Will i get into trouble?
I got a nice doe on x-mas eve and by the time i got it out of the woods and dressed it was to late to check it in. Noone was open on x-mas plus i went to my wifes parents on x-mas and didnt get home tikk today after the checj in station was closed. Im going tom. to check it in but i hope i ont get into trouble for doing it late. In Ohio the dnr law says it has to be checked in by 8pm the next day after the kill. Do u think i will get into trouble for doing this?

RE: checking in deer late. Will i get into trouble?
you know i've always wondered about the way that law was was written. but it says that you have to check your deer in by 8pm if you get it on the "last day" of any of the seasons, or 8pm of the following day if the season's still going. i never had an the unfortunate opportunity to be in the position to find a deer on the last day of the season after 8pm to see what would happen. you should be fine because your deer isn't considered "killed" or "harvested" until you find it. you're not required to check it in the same day you harvest unless its the last day of the season, and there's still a month left, so you're ok there. so if you find it and have till 8pm the following day to check it in and the check-in station is closed im sure they have that covered. we don't get all the laws in that little booklet that they hand out when we get our lisence. i would call the ODNR before i took it to the check station and explain what happened. i've always wondered when you would be required to check a deer in that you shot during legal shooting hours but didn't find till after midnight. they need to change our tags to say "time shot" and "time found".

Most states have a number to call BEFORE you pass a deadline. I'm sure yours does too. BUT, now that you've missed it and the reasons why you missed it.... I think you'll be OK.. unless someone is feeling nasty. OR, you can say you shot it yesterday or today or tomorrow REAL early.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

In Arkansas you can check your deer online and most other states as well, don't know about yours. you might check into it. they don't know when you shot it, except for what you tell them. Your reasons for not checking it then are honest, they should understand, but taking the chance of that is up to you.

If you are real worried about it, call the DNR and explain to them what happened. I would just tell them you shot it yesterday morning and didn't find until last night. It is cold enough that she would freeze so I doubt they will question it. Just to avoid the hassle. If the checkstation people are like some of the ones from around here, then they wouldn't know if it had been dead for a couple of weeks.

Well i called the DNR yesterday and they said it shouldnt be a problem, so i went and checked it in and the check in station didn't even really care that i was checking it in late, plus some lady checked it for CWD, and she said that they haven,t found any yet in ohio so lets hope they donn't. Thanks
