Here's one that always gets me;


I always hear guys say that a deer was stomping its foot trying to scare them into moving.

Deer don't stomp their feet to cause someone to move. The reason deer do this is because there is a scent gland located between the hooves. It is called theinterdigital gland.

When a deer stomps its foot, it is releasing an extra amount of this scent which warns other deer that there is danger here. When other deer walk by this area later in the day, they will smell this scent an realize there is danger somewhere nearby.

This scent is normally released from this gland enabling deer to follow each other or know that other deer have been by here. I'm sure this helps deer relocate each other when they get seperated.

It is through stomping that an extra amount is released that means danger.


If a deer stomps its foot near your stand and another deer comes by later on in the day, it will immediately become extra cautious becasue it smells some of this scent lingering in that spot. Might explain how that big buck knows when you are there, even when it is up wind from you.

Deer also release some of this scent when they suddenly run after being spooked.

Anyway, deer don't stomp their feet at you, to try to get you to move.

Well unfortunately I've heard enough of them, and sadly most of them come from my hunting crew. It makes it very difficult to hunt seriously and effectively when "fourwheelers dont scare deer away." yet when they go by, the nice buck that was coming toward me decided to run instead of stay there. Also "deer don't have very good noses" and "swishers smell good to deer." it absolutely drives me crazy. Some of my family is so set in its ways it doesn't allow me the courtesy to hunt the way I would like to. They dont think tearing around on ATV's dawn to dusk messes with deer. Bucks dont get spooked by all this activity at all.

You guys won't believe this but I had a woman ask me if the deer layingin the backof my truck was male or female on opening day a couple years ago.IT WAS THEBUCK IN MY AVATAR!!!

My dad andI just looked at each other like "what the hell is she smoking?" Would you also believe she was the lady working the check-in station? Yes, I actually checked my deer in at that place.

I agree with Windwalker that they can smell it. I used to be the "bottle urinator" but not anymore. I just let it fly.

I have killed too many deer after peeing to go back to bottles. Try it sometime.
