Winter cover scent question?
I had used several different cover scents in the fall with much success. One I particularly liked was an idea I picked up somewhere? Boiled and strained off the liquid of leaves that were dominant in the area I am hunting. This "homebrew" worked great prior to freeze, but recently a deer winded me. I guess the deer figure something is up when they are smelling all this foliage when all the leaves have sinced dropped. (Deer smarter than I, case in point). Anybody got any other ideas for homemade cover scent concoctions? People have mentioned "pine" or "apple" & others, but I'm from central KS...and we are short on those types of trees. I would guess Deer would be suspicious of those non-native smells too, right? Yea, I know go buy some you tightwad! It's funny the spousal unit thinks nothing of dropping $75 on a couple ounces of her scent of choice, and here I'm looking for ways to avoid shelling out $10. Sad state of affairs huh?

Go out into the garden and get some dirt put it in a container.
Punch some holes in the container wet the dirt just enough so it is damp.
Put container with damp dirt into your sent safe bag with your hunting clothes.
Your clothes will have that fresh earth scent.

Since you are from Kansas how about corn, or soybeans, or wheat? If I were to use a scent right now, I would be looking for something that the deer are looking for, FOOD! Find out what their primary forage is this time of year in your area and 'match the hatch'. IHO That's all.

Good ideas fellas...will try them both. We do have corn, soybeans and lots of dirt. Never thought of using grains, and wondered how to get earth scent. But.....will now have to wait till next season AS I GOT MY FIRST BOWKILL THIS MORNING! This was my first year bowhunting.
Not much to brag about as it was only a little button buck (thought it was a doe when i shot), but it was a deer nevertheless and I was tickled pink. I was proud as punch till I got home and the kids and wife were inspecting the deer. My youngest boy (3-1/2) says "Dad why doesnt it have any sticks on it's head?". Oh well maybe next year! Had lots of fun, and I sure appreciate all the information I picked up off this site. Thanks boys.
