Don & Sarah, good luck in your new adventure. Some beautiful country up there for sure. I used to go sking out there every year, quite a few years back (24 to be exact). You will be in wildlife heaven out there.
You can put that new tent to use out there for sure.

Lots of hunting opportunities up there. I used to work for the Forest Service in that area back in the 70's. Great mule deer hunting west of there towards Craig and Hayden. Elk hunting has always been good around Steamboat Lake State Park and in the Sand Mountain area. Bears are pretty widely distributed. Summers are cool and winter is ski central. I would look for property north of town and drive in every day. Good luck. Roskoe.

Don...that sounds awesome!!
When we hunted Colorado, we hunted in that area. It has been about 4 years since we have been there though. Maybe we can start coming again if we know somebody in the area...hint hint...
We hunted southwest of there a bit. About 8 miles from Oak Creek. Take 131 south and when you hit oak creek head back north on twenty mile road. We were right in there on Rattle Snake Butte. Really beautiful country up there. We miss going so bad, but we just don't have anywhere to stay up there any more. The guy that owned the property we stayed at sold. We pretty much hunted BLM ground up there and we usually had some pretty good luck. Saw a lot of awesome mulies and elkall over the place.
4 years ago the housing costs up there were crazy!! I hope you guys can find a place that isn't to outrageous!! If my house was in Oak Creek (little hick town) it would be worth prolly about 150K and I paid 50K here in IL. Quite crazy!!
There used to be a really good reseraunt in Oak Creek that made awesome Chicken Fried Steak. It was Big Tunas then...might be worth a bike ride to check out!!

Thanks for the info. The place is expensive for housing. Seems like places that have what Steamboat offers are always a bit pricey. I think living there will make us feel like we are on vacation everyday, the scenery, mild temps, 300 plus days of sun a year, and the awesome big game hunting. My buddies here in IA are all ready to come out and hunt with me too. Everybodys' schedules nowadays are so busy, I really wonder if any of the guys from here will actually load up their bows and come out for a hunt with me.

Don and Sarah,
Cogrates on moving to Colorado! I was born and raised in Iowa and grew up in Missouri. So I know where you are coming from about "shooting enough whitetails, time to try something new". I have only been out here 6 years but in that time, I get get up there in the woods as often as I can. While it's not as wild as it use to be. There is still plenty of good hunting here. I don't make it upto SSmuch but I have been up there when the NWR west of Walden has 5,000 elk standing on it.That's where they all go in the late season after they get pushed out of the mountains. From SS you are only an hours drive from Wyoming and some premier antelope hunting. Everything you want is within a few hours drive. East out on the plains offer whitetails, antelope, pheasant, prairie dogs, coyotes, some world class Dark goose shooting. (Thats whatI do 60-70 days a year when not big game hunting)
The only down side is I don't think you will be able to get a resident tag this year.I can't remember if its 3 or 6 months to be considered a resident. You will definitly need a snow machine up there and If interested I have one I would part with.Maybe you would one that will lift the skis3' off the ground and top out at 130 mph.(Don't know whatI was thinking when I bought that thing) Only ridden twice It scared the b-jesus out of me and I parked it.
Keep in touch and when you get settled shoot mea PM! I can fill you in on the little bit I know about Colorado hunting.Have a safe trip.
