If youre going to use hay bales and take this from someone who makes hay on a regular basis. When shooting into bales especially round bales. dont shoot at the ends....the end on a round bale are the weakest parts of a round bale. Shoot the sides. YOU WILL NOT LOSE an arrow that way. For small 65lb bales. I have shot through some of them but it all depends on how tight they are bailed and how dry they are when they were bailed. If you take 6-8 square bales, the best way to shoot them so you dont lose your arrows is to shoot into the ends not the sides or top/bottom. You will be shooting into the layers instead of inbetween them. This will alos sharpen your shooting skills as you will have smaller areas to hit. Try it and see how it works.

If shooting square bales you need to shoot into the end of the bale, not the side or top. Shooting end on they will stop an arrow. Likewise on the big round bales you have to shoot the sides with the strings wrapped around them. Most of them will have soft spots that if you hit won't stop the arrow.

From what I remember there were 2 kinds of bales. One normal one that would have arrows blow right thru it. Then there were the really packed together ones that would stop modern arrows quite easily. Haven't really used either one in several years.

I use hay bales and they work fine for me and I shoot 70# 30" 420gr arrow.. you need a tightly bailed bale for it to work and when they get a little loose I just tighten them up with a ratchet strap around hte bale.. works fine.. been shooting em for about 2 years now..

We always kept 2 fresh haybales stacked in front of a wooden frame with mining belt behind it. It took a while, but eventually, you'd make a soft spot in the bales, and start plugging arrows into the rubber belt.
Then, we figured out that you could stuff a burlap Agway bag with blankets and clothes, and it would stop a freight train.
Been bowhunting for 14 years, shooting bow for 15 years, and this year is the first time I've ever spent a nickel on a bow target.
LOL - I thought EVERYBODY shot at haybales way back when.
