I'm not trying to change this....just looking for a legitimate answer. I actually think it would make MORE people feel better about "possibly" donating $$.

Nope. Then everybody would be bickering about which charity is best, and Justin would be stuck piling money up, converting it to a check, then mailing it to the appropriate charity... Just a drag.
Easier to just lick $5 in an envelope and mail it to the winner. They can use it to pay for their mount, which definitely won't be cheap. Just an opportunity to help out one of our own.
Obviously, if he/she doesn't need the dough, they can donate it to their charity of choice. If I win the big buck contest (more likely to be struck by lightning)- I'll donate it all.
