I use a .019 for 20 and 30 and a .010 for 40 and 50.

I use a mix of Greg and Rob's theories. My hunting pins are just green(20) & red(30). My close pin is 029 while the rest are 019. I have another yellow and green for 40-50 but they pretty much only come in during practice.

I used to think green for me was the brightest, but the last year or so it seems that yellow is the brightest in low light conditions to my eyes. I set up most of my sights as follows anymore. 20 yard pin .029 yellow, the 30 .019 green, 40 .019 red, 50 .019 yellow, & 60 .019 green. I have tried the .010 size pins but for my old tired eyes they just aren't big enough. I have limited my shooting range as well even out west. 50 is bordering on my limit now. Enjoy those young eyes while you have them guys.

ORIGINAL: Greg / MO

I've posted this before, and it's always received some praise... I need to patent the idea

For whitetails in the Midwest, I use three pins... 20, 30 and 40. The 20 is green (green light's on; let 'er rip!); the 30 is yellow (let's use some caution here, slow down and make sure this is right); and my 40 is red (whoa! wait a minute... let's stop and see if a better shot will present itself).

It's also the reverse order my pins "wink out" in the dimming light... I lose visibility of my red one first, then the yellow, and finally the green. As it gets darker, the brightest pins remain lit the longest as my effective kill zone shrinks.
I like that strategy...makes very good sense.

I've used all green pins as well and always count down instead of basing it on color. I never had a problem and all my pins were the same brightness.

20yd = Green
40yd = Yellow
50yd = Red (red is the first to go and the last to show)

I use all green. I do alot of hunting out of ground bilnds and it helps to have green when the light is fading in the late evening. Being in a black blind doesn't help much either. I am puting on a trophy taker top pin for this fall. That should help with the wrapped fiber......
