lol that cracked me up....perfect practice makes perfect. not saying your like this...im guessing your new to the sport..but i see too many hunters ONLY practicing a month before the season...or only caring if they are "good enough to kill a deer" or in a "pie plate" etc....my one buddy barely ever shoots outside of 15yds!!! he will step back to 25 and 35 once a blue moon and cant hit poop...but he knows that and wont shoot a deer outside 15yds.

im a hunter...and new to the sport....but at my peak this season i was smashing shafts at 35yds to the point i HAD to shoot diffrent spots at 35yds. i busted 3 shafts at 35yds with broadheads..not true robinhoods...but CLOSE.

im not great...but i enjoy shooting and shoot ALOT. takes some time and practice...ive only had my bow half a year.

and anyone that knows me here knows i aint BSing either...thats just what i love to do and i like to be at the top of my shooting game. i put in the time and practice...

youll get there with time. i never been to a 3d. im planning to go this year. im not going till im back ontop of my game though....right now i jsut got back into shooting seriously and only get a day or 2 a week to shoot..but ill get back to my A GAME soon enough..

Not correct of heavier having edge everytime. you'd have to have a huge diff in weight for that statement to be true. A lighter arrow with a FOC in the 19% range can out penetrate a heavier shaft to a point. Also, my 391 gr out penetrate my 520 gr. FOC of 391's in about 18%. FOC of 520's is 11% or so. Weight forward helps penetration too. Also, lighter arrow traveling faster usually always has a higher KE at the same draw weight.

Of course, this stirs the same issue as The physics being fun post in here too.

NO! That is so wrong! The only time that could possibly happen is if you use an arrow so heavy it's outside the bow's efficiency range. And that's got to beINSANELY heavy.

As long as you're talking about using the same bow at the same draw weight, with arrows running about 12 grains per poundor less,a lighter, faster arrow is NEVER going to have more KE than a heavier one.

I suggest getting a few copies of "Bowhunting World Magazine" and read some of Norb Mullaney's bow reports. He does a great job of charting KE and efficiency with arrows ranging from light to heavy.

Sorry, LittleChief, but you were being told falsehood and I had to correct it. Your setup is fine.

Mauser,
Been gone for a while. I'm spending time with my kids this evening. Yes, I'm new. I've only been shooting for about 5 months, butI shoot anywhere from 20 to 50 shots every day, usually out to 40 yards, but sometimes out to 70 yards. Since I ALWAYS shoot by myself, I don't know how good I would be alongside someone else. The only times I've been to a range, I was the only one there. I'm headed to a different range tomorrow. Maybe I'll see how I'm doing compared to some target shooters. Yeah, that probably will be embarassing since I'll be sighting in with the new arrows. Oh well, I've entertained people before......

How can foc be the determining factor in penetration? I was taught heavy arrow more penetration, lighter arrow less unless there is a outsert on the lighter arrow then that would give more.

Big, with a higher foc the arrow hits a solid object with more of the arrows weight being in front it makes the arrow flex less in the rear so more likely to penetrate because of less lost energy going in other directions. If there was more weight in the rear the arrow would whip around like a fishing pole.

FOC isn't the determining factor to penetration. It is a contributing factor. As passthru indicated, weight on the end of the arrow causes deflection. On the other hand weight on the front of the arrow, in effect, gets the arrow to follow the tip.

As bow hunter44 just stated, foc can help penetration but is by far not the only factor that determines it. KE, Momentum, Broadhead style, Broadhead sharpness, Cutting diameter, Arrow diameter, etc. There are way to many factors to keep going.

If i put a wrap and four4 inch quickspins on my 28 inch afc gametracker 2300 wouldnt that increase the arrows weight and put the foc farther back for flatter tragectory.

I thought the same thing at one time BIG, but FOC doesnt effect trajectory. Adding the wraps and the heavy quickspins, all your doing is decreasing FOC with the added weight. If your gonna add weight the best place to do it is up front.
