Don't overlook the small tracts......
If you've seen my recent turkey photos.....you'd know that I have a "fairly" healthy population around our property. The spot where the photos were taken is INACCESSIBLE to anyone who hunts, legally. These folks don't allow hunting on their property. Period.
I've spent some extensive time researching adjacent tracts.....and I found a 4 acre plot that is owned by a man in FL (nothing on the property). I also found an adjacent 7 acre tract that made me do my homework to find out who owned it. It's owned by a 24yr old guy who's engaged....and is saving to build. I located both of these landowners.....and I've secured access to these sites. The NEXT issue was gaining permission to travel through some other property to get to these areas. I did that, last night, also.
There's more than one way to skin a cat.......and just because you see game on land you CAN'T hunt.....it's always diligent to know where they're coming from and going to (i.e. land you MIGHT be able to hunt). I spent a long time on the phone.....and finally got to meet my young neighbor, last night. I'm all set, now (with an additional, GREAT turkey spot).
The GIS (and similar) maps that counties provide are a GREAT tool to helping us secure hunting land. USE THEM! You might get access to something like this......
I can't hunt them in this meadow......but I gained access to the cutover and the land adjacent to it.

Just for clarification.....
When I took these photos, originally, I DID have access to hunt them on two sides (the side NOT seen and the woodlot, behind them). I now have them surrounded!

I haven't gotten that far . The young landowner is a gun hunter.....so there "might" be a chance for me to get in there, early. I saw 6 BIG deer coming through that property a few weeks ago.....but where they'll be in 6 months is a different story.

You just won't let it rest will you?
That is a very good point. You certainly don't need 1000 acres to have great hunting. Good luck this spring... shoot one for those of us who aren't surrounded by hordes of turkeys.

Hey Jeff thats great to hear, You dont know till you ask.
I to gained some permission today for the turks. Actually i had permission on a small strip that connects our lease to a field, but the land changed owners. I was coming home from fishing this morning and seen the new owner on the property, stopped to meet him (real nice guy) and ask permission to hunt the strip and he said me and my son could hunt turks all we want but no deer. my son killed his tom last season there.
