Sup fellas - Imade the 2007 season's innaugural spotting run last night. Not much time, b/c it's still daylight at 9:30. Didn't see much of anything, maybe 50 deer, a few scrub bucks. No 2.5+ year olds yet. They'll show up in due time. Glad to see everyone is alive and kicking - enjoying the summer.

Troy, did you get drawn for your IA tag?

Anybody else planning any hunting trips?

Troy,
You'd probably flip at the amount of deer we have around here. last year in a 6 mile circumference route, it was fairly common to hit the 100 mark while spotting(and we aren't talking multiple passes)

My present longbow no, it's just not powerful enough. BUT you never know if I can get REAL good with these things, I've already got my eye on some real nice looking bows that I could get in a faster design and higher poundage and I just may be toting that out there. It would surely be lighter than that boat anchor wheeled bow

I'm really rooting for your cousin to drill an elk with his trad bow this fall.

Took my niece out yesterday evening and started filming for the first time this summer... We got 1 nice buck on video (looked like a 3.5 year old and he was a 5x5) and 3 other youngsters, 2 does. It was pretty cool, she'd never done anything like this before (14 yrs old) we had 2 of the young bucks and 1 doe come all the way off the mountain and walk right under my dual seater observation stand, she really dug that.. anyway.. the bucks here are at least 2/3 grown... looking good.. I'm getting the itch....

Hey guys, every now and then you get a nice surprise when out scouting and last night I got two!

I started by filming 2 nice bucks, one 2.5 year old5x5andanother 3.5 year old 4x4. Ryan the 4x4looked a lot like the buck we saw in the draw that day coming back from elk hunting ...

then to my big surprise... havent seen him for a long time. The buck I call wide rack and filmed last year shows up! He looks great, deep chested long bodied and..20 inches inside spread..his tines are'nt really tall but he has some growing left to do..I was so glad to see he made the gun seasons!!!! he was accompanied by a nice wide 2.5 year old 5x5...really wide too for a young buck..

then to top it all of... right at dark I get footage of a buck I have never seen before. 4x on one side and huge split browtine and small droptine (3 inches) on his 5x right side! My first droptined buck on film..

It was a great night of filming....oh and one more big bodied buck came out well below the droptine buck but it was too dark to film him..I tried the best I could to make out what he had on his head but couldnt..the stars were shining..at this time.. I slipped out of my set up ..and came home anxtious to view the footage..

Sounds like you were all over 'em Troy. Man, I bet you're totally pumped, buddy - that split brow buck sounds really nice, and widerack sounds like he's got some heavy headgear too. I couldn't imagine glassing that many 2.5+ year olds at one time. Around here, if you can get into a position toglass 5-8 bucks in one evening, you'll be lucky to see 1 or 2 that are 2.5 or better.

I haven't been out scouting at all, pumping all of my spare time into breaking in the new bow. Been shooting like a maniac lately.

Shot with a buddy today for an hour or soand shafted a gold tip. It was certainly dumb luck, but I played it off as a skilled marksman shot. LOL

Rybo -send some pics of your hog hunting day when u get time. Today was a primo day to be out there - cool, overcast. I wanted to go bad, but only could clear maybe 1.5 hrs today to play outside. Family stuff...

Troy,
You got to love those types of suprises. That one we saw outta be REAL nice this year.

Fran,
No other pics besides the one I sent ya. I'm not even going to say how far the next shot i missed was. After that a truck came and drove thru the field [:@]looked like he had dog crates in the back, he saw me and left. I figured by then all the chucks were spooked and I started getting hungry so I left.

Hey Shed, sounds like ou had a great time filming. Wish I had that many big ones roaming around my grounds. But I am not going to complain, at least I ave a place to go.I know how hard it is for some guys to find good private spots. Well, I dont know if I told everyone or not, but we made a new investment a couple of weeks ago. Got rid of the race car, trailer, and pop up, and bought a 2003 29' travel trailer. I will see if I can get a picture up here. we are heading out this Sunday for the Wisconsin Dells, taking the kids to Jelley Stone.

Big Daddy, nice new camper man!!!! You are going to love it. We got one (1999, 27 footer mallard)last summer and have really enjoyed it with the kids. Have a great time in Wis.

I've been looking at the film a lot today. It looks like I have two 1.5 year olds...four 2.5 year olds, two 3.5 year olds and wide rack coming it at 4.5. So one 4.5 year old so far. 5 of the bucks living within 5 miles of my place. 4 over at another area bout 30 min away.

- still wondering about the big bodied buck that I couldnt film due to darkness. He may be the same hawg wide racked buck I saw last week. That means there is a 3.5 year old drop tine buck in there were I CANT hunt..but can hunt close on the public accessible land next to the private..

I'll say this.. there are a lot more bucks out there than a guy thinks. Last night is living proof. For almost amonth nowI had NOT seenbut maybe two of the younger bucks...thats it....I have beenconsistently checking thesespots at daylight and in the evenings...last night for whatever reason was just one of those nights when many of them showed..The days are getting shorter I gotta makehay while the suns still shining.. in a month and a half they will be a lot less visible..

today the kids and wife, niece are all down at the lake, I am going through all my hunting clothing (got my new stuff in too!) anyway, washing and storing in my new containors.. it won't be long.. 56 days..
