Default scrape hunting is it worth the time

has anybody had any luck scrape hunting or is it all done at night? i live in massachusetts and i hunt a mountain that has a low flat terrain on the bottom that is littered with scrapes every year and on my cameras everything at night. i was thinking about trying to hunt the top of the mountain and giving it a try to maybe find daytime activity. ive been out looking for antlers since february and have found a lot of deer sign on top and alot of beds. cameras have been taking pictures like crazy up there. do you guys think things will change from now till bow season with oviously no pressure now of course? would this be a good area to set a stand alot of oaks up there this past year but i know that changes to through the years.

I have hunted successfully over scrapes for the past few years. My secret?

Use a scrape dripper that works only during the day. That will change those bad boys from being nocturnal to checking the scrapes during the daytime.

Good Luck!

I view scrapesas a way of knowing how hot an area is an the rubs can give you some type of clues whats in the area, along with tracks. The bucks move around with the does, so an area that is hot for two days may be cold the next, because they have moved onto another area.I may choose to hunt scrapes for an evening or morning but if I do not see a buck or doe a least that day I move on to another spot.

I tried a dripper 2 years ago and was impressed with the action it was getting. I ended up having to move my locations so I didn't get a chance to hunt it but it seemed to be getting some results when I had it up.

In my experiences having "hot" scrapes near you thru the pre rut can only help your odds. However, I would never just setup on a scrape nor would I even worry about them once the chasing phase is in high gear.

I shot the buck in my avatar this yearbeating upamock scrape on Oct 31st. Although this scrape was located in a 20 yard wide funnel andhe had no choice to walk by it, but againhe must have liked what he smelled.

The key for being successfull on scrapes for me was, figuring out which scrape lines to hunt at what time of the day. I killed 3 big bucks last year during the Pre Rut hunting a scrape line in the morning that the bucks were using on the travel route to bed. But that is the only time of year i will hunt scrapes is when they are freshly made or i will setup and try and catch them when they start making them. Well i take that back, i will hunt them in the Post Rut with a day time dripper above them to try and catch a buck looking for that last doe.

dont forget just because thereright now they will move after the winter is over.(most of them not all)i'd wait til late summer and early fall to determine if its a hot spot.and yes scrapes can work i was hunting 1 hot one last bow season hunted morning and evening.never saw deer but everyday it freshened up.it was hitting it around 1230 or 1 in the afternoon.when i wasnt there.set camera up abd caught him 4 days in a row.on day 5 he came in but sense something wrong and i didnt get a shot.he came by other times during shooting hours but no shots.so scrapes can be worth it.
