Is there any elk hunters here?
I've been reading all these leters about deer hunting (which I love) but I haven't seen a single entree about elk hunting. I don't think I have seen any letters from anyone west of the Mississippi yet either. Does anybody hunt over here?

Just keep reading and look at the big game forum for more. There are a few of us but also seems like mostly deer hunters and 3-D shooters and a bunch of midwest to east. Just more people in the eastern half and look what we have with Californicators having the most of the west's population. Oh well! Have found some interesting discussions from the deer hunters and seem like some real hunters in the group. Also some flaming jokes that couldn't gut an animal if their life depended on it. That's what makes this site fun for me when I have the time. Good hunting.

Heck yeah I hunt elk. Live just outside Denver Colorado. I didn't know what to do this year when I was able to get up to three elk tags. Been hunting them for thirteen years, since I was fifteen. There is no better animal to hunt! You must come hunt them with a bow and arrow. This was my first year with a bow for elk and it was the biggest rush and thrill I have ever experenced.

I would not say that I am an elk hunter. I would say that I am a FANATICAL elk hunter, there is a differance. I truly love them big smelly critters. I have hunted them in Wa, Mt, Ak, Id, and Colorado. There is no better tasting meat IMHO either.

It's good to hear from you guys. I've been bow hunting for elk here in MT for twelve years, but not very seriously until last year. Haven't shot one yet, but just having a 700 pound animal come in to 10 yards is an experience you won't forget. I think i might have better luck if I had a partner to help call. They always know exactly where I'm at. Any opinions?

I just started. Must not be any good cause I haven't got one yet! I am a deer hunting fanatic, but I wish I had started elk years ago. It's the best high (even without shooting one) you can get IMO.

Rbn-My buddies use tree stands on water and do well but I am a ground hunter. Did buy some scent lock stuff this year and I think it makes a difference especially the headcover for breath. Tried a double bull blind and that is a good tool too. Love to bowhunt elk and live for the fall. Good hunting.

RBNHOOD its good to see theirs others out there who share the same enthusiasim as my son and I. Theirs nothing like hunting ELK during the rut with a bow.We live in Idaho and so are very fortunate to be close to good elk hunting. We to have been hunting elk for 12 years.I wanted to say you are on the right track in your thinking a hunting partner would better your odds and oppurtunities to get into more elk at close range for the both of you. Since the elk would have the caller pegged not the shooter. To give an example of its success, in the twelve years we have been hunting together we have taken 21 elk and 10 more that my son or I have called in for friends. Not counting all the close encounters and misses that come from all the excitement. IM sure you can relate to that.So yes it can be a very effective way to get close to bulls.I noticed you said you loved to hunt deer but have not been very succesful yet on elk.One thing that may help (IF I MAY) is do not use deer hunting tactics to hunt elk.Elk are in a league all their own. I know for us and others aggressive calling is better than subtle calling in most instances, in both bugling and cowtalk.Especially when their getting in close. Most of the bulls that have been taken were bugled in and only a few cow called in.Elk are a very aggressive and might as well take advantage of it.Make sure your bugling is pretty good if you try this because they can identify an imposter real quick when in close as apposed to far away.So do your practicing in the off season and you will be ready. Sorry for rattling on so much, now you know why my wife calls me an elknut.I just love talking elk and sharing experiences. ELKNUT
