SuperDave,
I have never hunted specifically in unit 36 (the north side of I-70, Vailand Vail pass). But, I have seen elk there on countless occassions-lots of deer also. The trick, that time of year, is to stay high. The elk do not like to be hot. They'll move to the top of the nearest mountain just to beat the heat. Look for them right at timberline and above. I have hunted united 45 (one unit to the south of 36). Unit 45 is, essentially, my backup area-when I do not draw. This unit starts off at 10,000 feet above sea level. The elk hunting in unit 45 is incredible! I can honestly say the three biggest buuuullllls I've ever seen were in 45. All in all, that region of Colorado supports a good number of elk. I wouldn't have a single problem advising you to give it a go! Get into the best shape of your life, stay positive while hunting, and pm me if you need additional help/info.
Good luck!
