I believe they alert everything within ear shot of danger.........I have always thought that and got some pretty weird looks when I tell other people so I just gave up mentioning it.
This year I had a squirrel that was going nuts on me (pun intended)......he would not leave me alone. I mean, this went on for about 2+ hours. He would climb up one tree and look at me and bark........get down and go up another and bark........pretty much do anything he could to get up to eye level with me and flick his tail in my face and bark...........he seemed more angry then scared.
Finally it dawned on me and I looked up........sure enough there was a huge nest at the top of my tree and I was blocking his path back home. I actually felt bad for him but that's what he gets for building a house on a one way street I guess..........and yes, I saw nothing.
