RE: Scum thief
As far as I'm concerned, a thief should be shot on site.
That said, we don't live in that world. Whatever action you decide to take, be sure you won't get into trouble. The privileges you enjoy while hunting could be taken from you.
I find it repulsive that a man who fought for the freedoms is having his equipment stolen by scum bags.
You could leave a note. I'll copy an example of a note in another thread when I find it.

RE: Scum thief
Dear Sir,
If you are here to steal this stand I just thought that it would only be fair to warn you, that I will make it my first priority to find and kill you. I will also harm your family, and if I happen to be anywhere near here right now, I'm probably already pointing my secondary (stolen) gun (which is not registered to me) at you while pleasuring myself.
Thanks, and have a great day!
P.S. I'm looking forward to F'ing up your life!

If your using screw in steps cut 3/4 of the way through a couple steps. Enough so if somebody tries to pull themself up or stand on it it will break off. When you climb down and leave your stand for a while replace the top two steps with the cut steps. If your lucky you'll find the guy laying under your tree the next time you hunt.

Sorry to hear that happened to you. It seems that stealing stands, cameras, feeders, etc is happening more and more each year. I wouldn't worry about trying to get even, you would be stooping to their level. I don't see anything wrong with trying to catch them in the act with a trail camera or something like that. Just make sure they don't see the camera (or flash), becuase that might get stolen, too.

If you take action against the person yourself you'll only end up in trouble with the law, and make yourself out to be worse than they are. I've had 2 stands stolen both locked up. 1st was stolen off my fathers posted land. I had a idea of who took it. I called the authorities, and they advised me although not much can do they advisedto somehow mark all your stands with a identification mark, concealedas much as possible. Then to place game cameras in the area. That way the thief can be approached & proof shown.
What I did then was go to all my neighbors in the area, and ask them if knew of anybody stealing stands or seen anything suspicious. I also informed all them this property was Posted and we were looking to prosecute, the authorities had been contacted. It was amazing how many neighbors pointed to the same person I figured had done it. Of course when I approached that person he pointed fingers to several other possible people. I really stressed to him how pissed I was, and if ever caught anyone on the property again they'd be arrested. We weren't tolerating any bullcrap anymore. Fortunately we haven't had a problem since.
My 2nd stand was stolen off public land. I put it up a couple days before season opened, and when I went in the 1st morning to hunt it,It wasgone. That two was also locked. I had no clue on that one, so I left the thief a nasty note in a baggy tied to the tree.

RE: Scum thief
That sucks no doubt. I had that happen to me about 3 weeks ago. Only I know who did it because he's had a history of trespassing on our land. I got him back and didn't even know it though.
The day after he stole it (granted I'm assuming he was the one that stole it given previous history) I saw him slipping through the woods about 30 yards from my other stand I was hunting that day. I'm a photographer so I had my camera and a 300mm lens w/me. I snapped about 10 shots of him. Shots of his face and a wider view to show his exact location on our property. Then to let him know I knew he was there, I switched the flash on and popped a couple in his direction. You should have seen him high tailing it out of there... Sounded like a whole herd of deer leaving... I found out later that day my stand was gone... No needfor revenge, I'm sure he's worriedthe law is going to show up at his door anytime now...
