Default food scents

I have some persimmon flavored gel from walmart. Wanted to get an idea if I should use it. I have figured out where some does are crossing power lines behind my subdivision into a strip of woods. I want to set up just inside the woods there waiting for them in my stand. I am thinking it would be a good idea to place some of the gel where I want them to stop so I can get a shot. However, I doubt there are any persimmon trees in this area.. so these deer have probably never smelled persimmon before.
Do you think this would help or hurt? Would they freak out by a new smell like this?
Last August (well before the season opened) I was putting corn out with some of this gel so they would associate the smell with food. However since they are tearing down a lot of the nearby woods for new subdivisions there are surely new deer coming into this strip of woods.
Would it be a better idea to use a grunt or other noise to get them to stop for a shot?
Thanks

Can't beat a grunt, I have used it alot, it doesn't always work but it is a pretty reliable method.
