Default 1 1/2 yr. old 12 pt

During the past shotgun season a guy we hunt with shot a little 12 pointer. At first look you would figure it was a small 2 1/2 yr. old. It's body was not big, but some of the deer this year have been a little smaller.

When we cut it't mouth open to look at the teeth, it had almost no wear to it. The rack was not any bigger than a nice 1 1/2 yr. old, but usually they only have 4-8 points on our land.

The deer was about 10 inches inside, a main frame 9 with a kicker on each browtine and a droptine between the brow and G2. I am sick to think of what this deer would of been like in 2 or 3 more years, but I don't blame the guy. He does not have much time to hunt and needed the meat.

I don't think they took any pictures, but the rack may still be laying around after they skinned him. I will check during the next season.

I read somewhere years ago that the record(at that time) deer antler on a 1 1/2 year old was a 14 point with something like a 14 inch spread or maybe it was 16 points. Number of points is probably the least accurate measure of age. Look for mass with width. And that can mean nothing if you have bad genetics and nutrition. Every area has it's guage.

my grandpa shot a buck that they believed to be 1.5 years old. it was 13 points but it was just a tiny thin, narrow rack.from a distance you'd see the antlers and you wouldn't believe there were 13 points. deer was small too. i will add that he shot it out of my stand. the same dang stand that I didn't see a single deer from! damn it grandpa!

3 weeks ago I saw a 21 pointer that was 1.5 years old. Had 2 maim beams with a few points on the ends and lots of trash points around the bases

His horns looked like an antelope more than a whitetail.

You do know that the top front 3 teeth fall out and are replaced at around 20 to 24 months, so at 2 1/2 they are sharper then 1 1/2 .
