Default Spooked Deer?

Do deer sound an alarm noise when they are spooked? I have spooked two deer this week. The first walked in to about 5 yards behind me and then bolted off running. I never seen/heardit until I heardit start running off. After it ran about 75 yards I think it started screaming loudly about 5 times. Was this some type of an alarm or warning tone? The second deer was walking up the trail and was almost close enough for a bow shot (25 yards for me). Then the deer made a u-turn and went back where it came from. After it got out of sight I heard it start running and the same loud scream tone. I'm pretty sure it was the deer making this noise. It sounded like a giant jungle bird except it sounded like a nasal type tone.

The noise your refering to is a "snort" It is an alarm souind they make to alert other deer, and sounds like a high pitched sneeze of something similar, some do it only once, and some do it over and over. Other deer can hear it surprisingly far, and know something is wrong in the area, but Ive also noticed sometimes other deer dont leave the area because of it, but they will be cautious. Good luck!

Thanks. This bow hunting is hard, being so close to them requires a lot of being still, quiet and odorless. Bow season ends this weekend - I'm not giving up.

You certainly do have to work for them when using a bow.

BTW, they often stomp when they snort and release an alarm scent onto the ground from a gland between their hooves.

When I get busted, they usually stare at me and "snort-wheeze" and stomp a few times trying to get me to move so they can decide if I'm OK or not. They have decided to leave in a hurry in all cases but one.

that happened to me a few times last year. It was usually the same two small ones that were hanging out around my stand area. They would let out loudest, sounded like almost a high pitched sqwauk. Scared the heck out of me the first time. Just glad I didn't walk up on them in the dark, I just might have shet myself....
