Where would you hunt? (Pic inside)
I have a week-long hunt on 1200 acres comming up. There will be 30 hunters allowed on this property. I was curious where you guys would concentrate based on this map. The area allow to hunt is BELOW the red line. This was a strip mine that the state has taken over and opened up for bowhunting this year. There are 10-15 ft. high burms everywhere. What do you think? I was thinking of concentrating on the funnel areas to the north east just below the creek that runs parallel with the border.

One thing I failed to mention is that since opening season (oct. 1st) each week there has been up to 30 hunters a week in this area. There is a road that goes near that lake area and I am pretty sure most of the hunters each week have gone into the north west area. I agree that is a great funnel. I fear that most of the big bucks have either moved or gone nocternal from the hunting pressure. That is one reason I am thinking of the North east, or just the eastern area down the big power-line cut towards the "fingers" of the lakes. My plan is to get there early my first day and spend the morning scouting. Any other thoughts?

Those dark areas in the NE section are most likely pines. If full grown with no understory they will be a desert except on the edges. If there is understory or are young it is a good bedding area potentially. You may just end up pushing a bedded buck by some other hunter. Which way is the entrance? I would start by getting in deep early and let the late comers push deer your way. Avoid the open areas and try to find some thick stuff on the edge of hardwoods or some oaks along those pines.

I changed the picture to show more details. The rep "p" are parking areas. The greenish line is the road, the blue like is an old RR track. the purple circles are what I would think of as funnel areas. I walked to the lowest purple area to the left a few months ago and deer were everywhere back in there. IF you get of the open cleared path, it is very difficult terrain. 10' up, 10'down'10'up'10'down, ect. piles of dirt in rows from the mining of the area. All covered in trees of course. Lots of trails in the obvious funnel spots. I am just not sure where the deer in tat area are going for food. Not sure if they are heading north to the crops. If they are then those 2 funnel areas north should show lots of sign.
