Mature buck down, my 1st Halloween buck!
Oct 31st.
It was a rather gloomy day with showers most of the day. I got settled into my highwall / coal pond funnel stand at 2:45 this afternoon.
The bucks haven't been chasing much here but are hitting the scrapes really hard. Once I arrived to my setup I freshened up a rather large scrape with Ms. Doe Pee's Estrus Urine beforeclimbing up and settling infor my evening hunt. Now fast forward to 5:20pm. I saw a good buck 60 yards out slowly closing the distance. He just wasn't making much forward progress because he was hitting every scrape throughout my 20 yard wide funnel.
Finally he then made his way tothe scrape that I freshened up a mere 10 yards away andproceeded to thrash the licking branch and paw out the scrape, nearly doubling it in size. He really seemed to be into that Ms. Doe Pee Urine
Once his attention was off the scrape Iwas anticipating him to turn broadside and offer a shotas he was facing medirectly on. I was let down big time to see him pull a 180 and walk straight away from me. The only thing going through my mind was disappointment from a close encounter that turned into a missed opportunity. Thankfully, Five yards later he turned to his right taking him acrossanother highwall funnel that attaches two large ridges rather then going back across the otherfunnel which he came from. Hewas nowquartering away so hard I had no shot from the severity of the angle. Luckilyhe turned to a slight quartering away positionand I touched off the shot at 33 yards.
150 yards later I recovered my largest bodied buck weighing in at197 pounds dressed. He will gross out near 140 as a main frame 9 point. It was a real wet evening but turned into a great night!
