You should be commended on your restraint. That shows great character and ethics in you most hunters are missing. The suggestion I'd make too is a grunt tube. In that deers state, he might as easily came marching right back into your setup. I've had great success with calling and that might have been all you needed.

Again, 445, great job, it's not always about getting the deer, the hunt alone is a great memory, the hardest part was getting that close, you've succeeded, the shot, that's secondary, you know you were prepared for it and not taking an iffy shot,,,,,you da man!

thanks guys. rob I did have a grunt tube with me as I just thought he was going to travel on one of the many paths that would take him in perfect shooting position. I never thought he would take the only path which is not a path he just trail blazed one for himself away from me. I mean straight away. But hind site is 20-20. Even my wife said why didn't you grunt at him As I just don't know if just thought he would pass by and I didn't need to. Oh well I will be better prepared in the future.

Don't get down on yourself. I went 2 bowseasons without getting a real nice buck. although i am picky during bowseason. Just remember when something like that happens its called hunting. It's not easy by any means. Just be prosistint and you will connect sooner or later. Better luck next time.

P.S. I had something similar happen to me this year. It was huge a 12 point. It took me 2 weeks to get over.

Good decision to pass on the shot. Wounding the deer would have made you much more miserable. I had almost the identical thing happen to me last Tuesday first thing in the AM. I passed and my patience paid off at 12:30 PM. A big P&Y 8 point came by and offered me a nice 20 yard broadside shot. No tracking necessary on that one. I would rather had the buck in the morning but I have been on the long blood trails that end up with no deer at the end. It's an awful feeling and I'll try to aviod it at all cost. Even if it means never taking a shot. Tag sandwich is better than wounding a deer. Good Luck. He or another will be by sooner than you think.
