Big Illinois 10 pt (pics)
A good friend of mine killed his first big buck with a bow this morning. He has killed several does and smaller bucks with his bow, but never could get things to work out on a big buck.
Well, things worked out today. The buck was close by he said for almost 15minutes and he had drawn on him and held for almost 2 minutes once already and had to let down. The buck was behind 5 does and one of the does was hot because he was dogging her pretty close. He said he thought the buck had him pegged right before he got the shot because he was looking right up at him. Right when he thought the deer was going to bolt the doe made a quick dash and the buck lost all focus on him in the tree and headed for the doe. He drew and shot as the buck walked out from behind a tree and stopped. The buck only took a couple steps after the shot and just looked around. Donnie was concerned because of how far back the shot appeared, but he new the deer was quartering some. The buck then just walked into a thicker area about 40yds where he couldn't be seen. Just when Donnie was thinking what the heck is going on he said he heard the deer fall and could see the white of his belly and his legs kicking. The shot had entered just behind the last rib and exited out the far side behind the sholder.
These are pictures from when he brought the buck to my taxidermy shop tonight. The buck will gross roughly 151 and net 146 4/8.
