Anything beyond 40 - 45 yards would beway to riskey for me.
If I'm certian that I'm gonna hit that deer in the vitals , I'll take the shot even if it is 40 to 50 yards out.
Just remember the longer the distance the more room for error.

i have pins to 80 yards and practice regularly at distances over one hundred yards. I realize its unethical to shoot at deer in most instances at those distances however, if conditions allow it i have killed animals past 80 yards. Including 3 pronghorn antelope and several whitetail does.

I had the biggest deer I've ever seen broadside at 35 yards two years ago. I would have loved to kill that buck but the wind was blowing hard. Max. distance depends on a number of factors. That day my max. distance shrunk quite a bit. I saw three trophy bucks that day, no shots but a great day afield.

I routinely practice out to 70 yards and hold 4" groups at 60, so if the conditions were right, and I knew the exact range, I would take one at 50.

It depends on your tolerance for wounding animals. I hate wounding deer. I do everything in my power not to wound a deer. Therefore my max is 30 yards. That's the maximum distance I know I'll kill it every time.

I can hit vitals on my 3d target at sixty yards 4 out of 5 times. That means I'd wound adeer 20% of the time at that distance. That is unacceptable to me.
