Stand Height

RE: Stand Height
I hunt on the mountain of north alabama, and I can go up 20' in a tree. In front of me I can be shooting down 40' while behind me I can be looking at the ground. Some places it's not soo steep but those deer sure do love the hard to reach places.

No doubt. In 13 years of bowhunting I have over 50 kills in four different states, and almost half of them are from the ground. The gus in my family give me grief, but I kill deer every year from the ground. Like my new ladder stands as wee, but it can be done with the right setup.

Dont like heights myself, I have 5 ladder styands, and the highest one is only about 11'. I know it would be better to be higher, but I have been hunting 4 years, and have 3 bow kills to my name, so it can be done. And I have passed on many deer that had no idea that I was there. Just make sure that you have lots of back cover. NO point in going any higher, if you wont be able to move when you see a deer becouse you are scared crapless.[&:]

I try to get 20 to 25 ft. but the trees don't always allow it. I usually use a climber so I need a straight tree. Sometimes I have to put up a strap on and try to get at least 20 ft. or in good cover of limbs.

RE: Stand Height
Most of the stands I've taken deer from are no higher than 16 feet, most of them 12 to 14. But I hunt mostly flat swampy terrain with few ridgesides to contend with.
Remember: the higher you go, the smaller your chance at a double lung shot is as well as the size of your target.

Highest stand is 20ft lowest stand is only 12 feet and I don't spook many deer just watch the wind and do all you can to cover/eleminate sent. I also do alot of hunting from ground blinds bot comercial and thrown together setups in the woods. All work good in certain places and wouldn't work good in other places. I let the lay of the land and the wind direct the wayI set up the area.

RE: Stand Height
The stands I set out this year are about 32 feet off the ground. I have a ladder stand set at 12 ft (as high as it would go). If I'm climbing I'll usually go up about 25 feet. 32 feet is up there. If you got a queezy stomach I don't recommend it.
