I've never elk hunted before but I've seen lots of elk while deer hunting public landin Northern Lower Michigan. I've had nice bulls within 30 yards on two occasions while deer hunting.

I told my dad if I get drawn for a Michigan elk permit that I'm going to use my bow. He thinks I'm crazy because the odds of drawing a bull elk tag in Michigan is like winning the lottery. He says why waste a once in a lifetime opportunity by using a bow instead of a rifle. I think it would be quite an achievement to get a Michigan bull elk with a bow. That's my dream. He thinks I'm nuts

Northern panhandle of Idaho. You guys will get a good dose of pics, whether we put a bull on the ground or not. Hopefully it'll be one(or more)of the hunting party behind a bull rather than all scenery pics. I'll be hunting with a few of the guys from here.

Ryobohunter, that sounds awesome!! From your description sounds like you might be hooking up with Troy.

I hunted elk around Sun Valley around 10 years ago or so, I blew an opportunity on a huge bull there...

Steep country, when I wanted to sit down all I had to do was lean back ...

Good luck...

fatsbucknut, until a fella has hunted elk one really doesn't understand what an accomplishment this guy has done. I love his comments about mental toughness. If you have ever been in the wilderness for an extended period of timealone you know what he is referring to.

Those numbers are so far out into space compared to a normal person that it doesn't seem even possible that a guy could achieve that kind of success! For me to say they are absolutely positively remarkable doesn't even cover it!

What I meant was that some of the very best public land can in fact be completely land locked. If you have deep pockets however, well, everything has its price. This in no way garauntees a bull, it just gets you into country that no one else can hunt. I am very new to elk hunting, but I do know guys that walk further , and hunt harder than everyone else. They kill bulls every year, just not 370 plus bulls.
