Brandon, I have been in your shoes. I look at a deer ,hopefully from a distance if I can, I acknowledge that is a deer I want to take, then put down the binos. and never look at the head again, try to focus on the kill zone. I will glace at the head to see what the deer is doing ,ie: wich way is is looking or at me, but I only focus on kill zones, I do this with bucks and does. I never let the head, tail or any other body part distract me from the kill zone. deep breath, let out while squeezing the release trigger. Good luck. ~Ben

This is not something that is easily conquered overnight. It something along the same lines as target panic. I think everyone gets excited when they see the deer coming in and their heart turns upside down. I know it happens to me. What I do is and like BenfromVA said is hopefully you get to see the deer coming in from a distance, it gives to time to recognize whats about to happen and to start to calm yourself and prepare for the shot. Concentrate on where you are gonna draw and look only at the kill zone. Also this is what I do and just did it monday with my 11 pointer. Talk to yourself under your breath. Tell yourself theres nothing to this, your gonna wait for the shot pin the kill zone and squeeze off the shot. Talking myself down has worked wonders but you dont always have time to do it. Them darn deer just appear out of knowhere sometimes. But try it talk to yourself and calm your self down before the shot.
Hope it helps

Been there.....
Good advice thhus far.
What helped me more than anything else was observing deer at close range in the off season. Maybe not where you hunt, but put up a stand, or prepare a ground blind, take a camera, and try to get close, and often. You will become more comfortable around deer at close range, you'll also learn what you can get away with, and not - without the pressure of having to make the shot.
It will not help you this season - but in the long run it will.
As far as this season, tell yourself your NOT going to try to shoot at a buck approaching, or even move. Let it come in and maybe even pass by, then draw, and PICK A SPOT on the deer. If its still moving away, give a very short, audible grunt with your mouth. The deer will stop, and maybe even turn towards you a little. It is very hard to do this... I know, but you'll find that once a deer has passed by you can get away with 10 times the movement, controling your panic is another matter - but some good advice has already been given.
Good luck - post pics of your buck when you take him.

Once I determine the deer is a shooter, I try not to watch him the entire time during his approach. I usually look at my release attached to my string, check my arrow to be sure it is laying on the rest, and watch the deer in my periphial vision. When he enters my effective shooting range I will pay a little closer attention, not until is it time to draw do I totally focus on the deer. Passing deer sometimes will also give you the experience of how to handle close encounters, it is all about how you deal with the adrenaline best.
I read one time that the adrenaline rush you experience is a natural phenomenon. If we were predators that had to chase our game down and kill it with our own force, the adrenaline would aide us in our ability to perform better. However, when using modern weapons and trying to be invisible and ambush a deer, the adrenaline works against us.

(BUCK FEVER) I take two asprins before each hunt and have a bottle in the stand just in case. HA HA HA. No I believe if I ever lose the feeling I get while being up close I'll probably just hang my bow up.

Yea.. I also believe that is why so many of us hunt. It took me many bucks before I was able to do all the things necessariy to drop my first. Make sure you have good cover and sent control. You can get by with more mistakes.
