Default Ground hunting sucks....

I was going to my stand this afternoon at 3:30pm. As I start through the woods I jump a large deer that just runs out of sight. I make a huge cirlce and hunker down into some tree-tops. I sit there for no more then 30minutes when a deer comes into sight about 30yrds below me. I look around and watch as the deer enters the open timber from the brushy low gap. I get ready for a possible shot as the deer comes into the open. But as I draw back, the tree tops prevent me from coming to full draw. So instead of spooking the deer I had to sit back and watch the deer walk around and browse. After putting the bow back down, and getting my binoculars, the large deer turned out to be a small racked 3pt. Needless to say, the ground is not for me. I'll be back in the tree's with the squacks tomorrow.

welcome back dude

i have been busted on the ground also. Unless the stand is perfectly set up in advance with ample cover to draw and be unseen it can be a real pain in the arse.

I stay with the squacks also (whatever a squack is)

Did you have to trim any limbs for shooting lanes from your tree stands. If so, why wouldn't you prepare a ground blind the same way, trim shooting lanes. Granted, ground blind huntng may still be more challenging, but take some time to prepare for a shot, and it can be effective.

Been there and done that myself HC,It's not like you picked the spot to hunt from.
You kind of look for the closest cover and get to it in a hurry. And wait to see what materializes. You dont want to be moving around snapping branches off at a time like that.

It's not how big the Deer,But the size of the experiance that matters!!

Although I am considering it, I usually don't like going up with the birds and such. Jumping the deer and hunting from the ground are really two different things. I'll stay on the ground and take my chance on my feet. But you guys who do climb seem to get all the shots or at least it seems that way.

you guys are missing the point.....or some of you are....

i jumped the deer on the way to the treestand. i didn't see if it had antlers or not but it was big. so i made a large circle and got down in some brush to try ground hunting. i never cut limbs or anything cause that would be to noisy. so i just sit down and waited. a deer happened to come by but i couldn't get a shot due to the junk around me that was my cover.

but as for me, i'm going back to the tree's where i am more comfortable.

I think your giving up too early. You jumped a deer. Very easy to do, even on the way to a tree. You figured out what it might do, and you got ahead of it circling around. GREAT JOB!! You picked a bad spot on the ground to sit.

Perhaps you could try it again, but find a better place on the ground to allow for a shot?

I love ground hunting, have been very close to a lot of deer on the ground. I have 4 ground blinds on 40 acres, can hunt the wind that way, and the snoopers from the other properties don't know where I hunt from, which is cool.

I think you learned something from this and should use it the next time the "ground bug" hits you.

And it gets easier later in the year once more leaves have fallen.
