Default Setup for Bison

I am going to be taking a Bison with my bow this year and would like some input. Current setup is a

Hoyt Vortec saber cam 29.5" draw @ 74lb
Beaman ICS Hunters 340 shafts crested
Rocky Mountain Ironhead 125 heads.

If I run the numbers right I am getting 73 ft-lb of KE. Do you feel this would be enough energy to make a quick kill at a reasonable hunting yardage? Any advice would be appriceated.

Andrew

More than enough to take a bison as long as you don't hit one of the big bones in the front leg.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Mez. That setup has been strong medicine for Deer, Elk, Bear and anything else I have shot at. I have not had any experience on the Bison...yet

It won't be much different than the elk.

That must be sweet to get to hunt bison. Where are you hunting and is it a paid hunt? I used to live in Oklahoma and got to eat some bison burgers. Yum.

There was this rancher sitting in my bowhunting class who raised bison and had told me a story on how reluctant he was in allowing bowhunting on his ranch until he allowed a friend/ aquaintaince that he knew was a good shot so he allowed this guy to bowhunt. The rancher had told me this guy had shot the bison right in behind the shoulder at 30yrds and the bison didn't even react to it and just walked away and laid down and went to sleep. This rancher was amazed and invited me to hunt there for $600.00 a cow or $1200.00 for a bull, but I'm not really intrested in bison meat as what I have tasted seems to be on the lean and chewey side.
Go for it and enjoy, your set up is adaquate provideing you avoid that dang shoulder. Keep us posted and let us know how you do. Good luck.

Yea, but he was using a two blade and >100 pound draw at less then ten yards. Both the pony and bull at full boat run. Very exciting stuff though.
