RE: More on 412 pound buck
fishy to say the least. Very Rompola-esque.
How hot does it get in Nebraska in November? For a deer to be stinky and bloated (indicating advanced internal rot) after one night and one morning in a ravine (where low temps will hold later in the day) it would have to be some pretty warm weather, which we did have some of last November in many places.
Also, if the deer was "bloated" how can you use tape measurements to accurately estimate weight? It's blown up loke a balloon!
But my biggest question is: You think you might have an exceptionally large buck that MIGHT go over 400 lbs live weight....and you don't actually weigh it to find out?
I wonder if he'd be interested in buying my 500 fps PSE... oh and I can give him a really good price on a bridge in New York too!

I'd have to agree with most of what's been said - especially regarding the 10 minutes he was supposedly able to hold back the bow string.
Much of the story feels fishy to me too but there's not much way to prove him wrong or right since he didn't leave us with much conclusive evidence.
Can't blame him with not wanting to give up his hunting spot, but if he ever wanted some credibility to his story, he could have told the reporter "off the record" who could have confirmed it with tribal officials.
As for Bass Pro, I think it's a great idea to get a full body mount if they are indeed doing so. It's a curiousity, and in the right context, with the right explanation, it will have hunters talking.
Even if you don't believe it to be true, you can at least see what a deer that big (heavy) might look like. They are out there and have been taken and entered into the record books.

Regardless of how long he had to hold his bow whether it be true or just an estimation of how long ,this is one nasty buck and congrat's to Mr Whitt on a fine kill.

How many times have any of you held your bow at full draw for what seemed like an eternity? Maybe he exaggerated that 10 minute time just as anyone else does. I don't think the pics have been altered. But I'm not gonna believe the 412 lb weight just off an estimate, too many variables to compensate for. He should have weighed the damn deer, especailly if he's tired of being fodder for internet sites such as this one, then there'd be no arguing. Definetely a HUGE body on that deer though.

If I shot one with that huge a body, the first thing I'd be looking for would be a scale to weigh it! The rack is very nice, but pales in comparison to the giant body and you would think that a verified weight would be something everyone would want to know.
Unless he felt that the tape measure yeilded a significantly higher weight than a scale would have . . .
I also agree that it would be highly unusual for the deer to be bloated and smelly after that short a time period--esp in November and in a draw.

I just looked at the other pics. No wonder that it stunk -- it appears that he gut shot it which would explain why he waited for 4 hours after what he described as a decent shot . . . at 5 yards.
It WOULD have smelled bad, but they deer probably lived long enough that the meat hadn't gone bad yet.
