Default One for the Experts

OK Experts...

As some of you know, I have been hunting from the ground, not out of desire, but more one for a lack of suitable trees. I finally found a suitable tree.

This tree is is in the middle of a windbreak that is about 15 yards deep. There is a trail that runs the length of the windbreak (North & South). There are trails that from the two fields on both sides of the break from all/various dierctions.

The multibranched tree is thick enough to hang a stand & get me about 12' up. The windbreak/thicket is very thick around the tree yet the vantage point that I could/would have gives me ample shot opportunities to the NE, E & SE zones.

Can you hunt it? You never know from where the deer are coming... I've been watching them and they seem to not have a pattern of movement based on time of day, but rather wind direction.

They seem to like to walk with their backs to the wind.

So do I stick a stand in the tree and only hunt it on VERY calm days, or because of the multi trail effect, any day?

BTW - The wife is ready to stick me in an asylum because I am so scent conscious. "Doing your hunting laundry 'special' for the deer, you are nuts!".

Suppresscent suit, hood, rubber boots, wash with a no UV non-scented sports wash, HS body/hair shampoo, spray everything down with a scent eliminator & even have a separate release for practice.

Yes. With your level of scent control, yes. I do it all the time. And don't worry about the height of your stand, as long as you have cover and can draw unseen. Good Luck.

Justin from what you have described and the fact that they follow no pattern in regards to time, but simply wind, I would hang the stand where you want and hunt it. There is enough of a variety in trails versus wind that at least one of the trails will always be good.

hunt it! What are your other options - don't hunt, hunt somewhere else, etc.

My advise to any hunter concerning any spot - hunt it, check it out, find out what the deer are doing, etc. It is very rare to pick the perfect tree in the perfect spot and hunt it on the perfect day at the perfect time! Most great stands were discovered by the hunter putting in the time in the general area and gathering enough information to find that perfect spot.

Good luck. Let us know if you score.

Definitely hunt it. I hunt at the edge of a field in the tree line that runs next to a stream that is beside a tractor trail that borders another big field. It is 37 yards to the tree line across from me in a field that is about 125 yards long. I can have deer coming from any and all directions. I am in a valley where the wind tends to swirl in every direction. If there are signs of deer go for it! I too am a scent free freak. I thought maybe I was going a bit overboard when all of my husbands buddies gave me a hard time about my routine. Then I had two doe come in on the same trail that I did, they didn't smell a thing, neither did the button buck that sniffed the bottom rung of my ladder stand. I picked this spot 2 years ago, and I have seen more deer in a week than I did in 2 years.

Thanks all.

Did I mention that it's a semi-rural / semi-suburban area. Lots of huge 25+ acre properties mixed in with some samll bean & alfalfa/hay farms.

Perhaps what little scent I do leave, will be ignored.

But hey - with the CD Necklace helping - they'll never , smell or even hear me. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
