Climber vs portable using sticks
This may have been gone over before.....don't know.[&:]
I love my climbing stand, but lately am thinking of getting another portable stand(Lone Wolf Alpha strap on) and using it in conjunction with their climbing sticks. One reason........sometimes I find a near perfect spot and using a climber is nearly impossible because of the trees. Sometimes I like being able to place a stand in a group of trees, crooked tree, fenceline, etc. especially in the late season when everything is bare. I can get my climber off my back, unpacked, fastened and up the tree pretty quick IMO. Here is my question to those who have used both:
In terms of time and being quiet, can a person install the sticks and stand in about the same amount of time as using a climber?

THat's what I am planning new fornext season.I bought a set of lone wolf sticks, already have a light hangon that goes up easy. 1st time out with the sticks was pretty simple. I little more practice and I bet I could hang sticks and a stand in only 10 minutes longer than using a climber. So now I won't be quite as limited.

It's a good idea, Coug...
I've always carried Cranford steps with me when bringing out my fixed-positions. While I love their obvious versatility, I think learning to use the steps comfortably could be a whole lot faster.
It would also add another choice when hunting public land like I do, as most states don't allow devices to be used which would harm the tree...
As far as your question, I can't help a bit... though I do have a friend who bought some and watched him use them a couple times... he could probably get up in a tree in about the same time as most could with a climber, if that helps any.

I bought the Ameristep Outfitter hang on and their Rapid Rails and I love them. I only used my climber twice this year. The versatility they provide can't be matched. It does take some practice to learn how to set up quickly but I'm almost as fast as using my climber now.
I have some climbing sticks but I don't really care for them.
Here is a pic of one of my setups. The deer approach from the camera angle and you can see how much cover the back of the tree offers. You would have to pass this tree up with a climber.

I have used a Summit Viper climber the lastseveral of years and loved it, primarily for comfort and safety, but last winter I got a deal on a Lone Wolf Alpha hang on and a set of three of the climbing sticks so I bought them thinking there may be a time when I could use them. During my vacation this Nov. I gotSOsick and tired of climbing up and down the tree every day with that climbing stand I decided totry the newhang-on. What a joy!! I love that stand and the climbing system. The strap and versa-button make installation easy and quiet, but most of all.... it's completely ready to go the next day! The climber will still be used when I am only going to be hunting an area occasionally, but if I'm going in there everyday the only way to go is with a hang-on.
Edit: I can put the Lone Wolf up in about the same timeas I can climb with my Summit(but... I am a slow climber because I am afraid of heights)

if youre going to leave it in the same tree for any amount of time id go with the sticks and hangon. irarely use my climber because its alot louder than climbing the sticks and i like to be quiet.

nice spot, I have a portable for the honey hole, and the climber to pop in here in there. the thing about a portable you can leave there, and dont have to worry about setting up every time.

RE: Climber vs portable using sticks
I have an ol' man climber that I bought 3 or 4 years ago -- haven't used it at all this year or last. My hang-on and screw-in steps are what I use nearly every time out. Through practice, I'm just as fast with them as a climber.
