RE: what is a good starter bow for a youth hunter?
i bought my 11 yr old son a browning micro adrenaline 30-40# this year. he is already shooting it at 36#'s.
remember, what you can draw back while practicing and what you can draw back quitely and with minimal movement without warming up first in a hunting situation are 2 different things.
browning has a youth upgrade program. for $45 you can have your local archery shop change the limbs to 40-50#s.
also, browning bows are made by PSE.
hope this helps you make up your mind,

Good point on age Stillhunt. I shoot a Tomkat also (and love it), but my son I bought the Browning Micro Midas for is nearly 10... He's got alot of room left to grow in the next 4-5 years. I figure he will be ready for an adult size bow when he is 15-16.

Another vote for the Brownings. The difference in the Midas and the Adrenaline is that the Adrenaline has all camo and a wood grip where the Midas has a foam grip and black riser. Both are good bows though and shoot really well with lots of adjustment.

Another Browning vote here. With the draw rangethey offer(without the need of a bow press)it will grow with you. They also offer limb weights from 30 to 70lbs so finding the right combination is easy to do and you will probably be able to fine one bow thatyou can use now and still use untilyou areready for a 70lb bow.
PSE/Browning make good bows.Browning bows areall I have ever hunted with. I have owned others but I see no reason to switch my hunting bows from Browning.

The Parker Buck shot is basicly the same bow as the Browning, but for $50 they will upgrade the limbs. 18-28" as low as 20lb as much as 60lb. I bought one for my som who is 10. In less than a minute I can shoot it and I draw 28.5" I am 5'11" and 200 lbs. This one will grow with you.

I know you stated that you wanted it to be under $300, but my sister just recently bought a Bowtech youth bow, its an AWESOME shooter. I started out with a Parker, but i still have to agree with the others, the best bow for the money is the Browning. Good luck with it and get them hunting!!!
