First Bow Kill -- Success in PA
I've hunted for 15 years and killed a bunch of deer with the rifle/shotgun. Finally got my first bow kill, a doe, in yesterday's PA opener. Easily my most rewarding hunting experience to date.
Was hunting a local military installation. They own thousands of acres of land and strictly control access to it. It was closed to hunting last year due to 9/11. So the deer in there bascially haven't been hunted for almost 2 years.
I hunted from the ground in between a big blowdown and huge tree. At 7:15, a big 3 point comes and stands at 20 yards, perfectly broadside looking the other way. This year in PA, however, he is a protected animal. 10 minutes after he walks away, a big 6 pt. with a wide spread comes walking by at about 35 yards, offering no good shot. Finally, at 8:30, a group of 3 deer come in. 2 deer follow the same trail as the bucks. They split up and travel on opposites sides of the tree. I quickly see the one on the left is a small spike, so I get in position for the one on the right. It stopped at about 25 yards and was quartering toward me. Suddenly, a noise behind the deer caused it to do an about face and look the other direction, thereby giving me a good quartering away shot. I quickly drew, aimed and fired. The arrow flew high and caught her right where the neck and body meet. I overestimated the shot distance as I was on the side of a hill shooting uphill at the deer, which distorted my yardage estimation. She dropped on the spot got up then got up fell for good about 50 yards away.
Although it was just a small doe, it was a very special trophy for me. I have an awesome tree picked out for next weekend. Hopefully the 6 pt. will make a return visit...

Congrats, Hoofer!
I took a doe yesterday also, after a 10 minute staredown during which she tried everything possible to get me to move. She finally relaxed enough, and started to walk away slowly. Her mistake! Oh yes, she was downwind of me, but I had a British military chemical suit on. Must have worked. 25 bucks well spent.
Avoid the inevitable until it is absolutely unavoidable!
