Sorry about the loss Rob...it is truly amazing what the whitetail deer is capable of!

I was also curious as to what type of call you are using...you said something about moving the brass...I have never heard of a call that fit that description

Well Rob, we've had this discussion once before, and you may not remember it, but, I do! Deer are indeed tough critters. I'm sure you've done everything you can to check and double check for this buck. I'd even bet you'll check some more! Keep you're chin up and hope to see him again.

Talondale, I agree with you word for word on your post that if it was some-one else, flames would be roaring. However, most of us don't know each other, we tend to form opinions based on peoples posts. Flames or lack of, are usually based on these opinions. Rob and I have disagreed on a few technical issues of the board management, but when it came down to hunting time, I'd sure welcome him and his ethics to go along with me.

People get flamed when they come on here asking questions that should have been answered by the tracking post, or ones that are too vague to be answered at all. Also you get the "he was so big, the shotbad, but I had to shoot" crowd, and those who just break every shooting/tracking rule ever made. I think the way Rob wrote out his post, more than his reputation itselfis why there's no one jumping all over him....although he was called on a few things that he clarified again. If you come on here sounding like a yahoo, you'll get flamed for it, if you come on here in detail, people will work with you and sympathize.

Tough break Rob, there's still a lot of the season to get a crack at him or another one.

Gosh! i know exactly how you feel. 2 weeks ago i had a doe walk up to me and i hit her at about 15yards. This was my first deer with a bow and i was really excited. Any way i thought that i had made a good shot buti let her sit for about 3 hours. after we took up the blood for about 250yards she bled really really good then after that nothing. After lossing the blood we looked for atleast 4 hours for the next blood. Then after all that failed we looked for the body for about 2 hours. We found nothing at all. All i can say is i hope that she is still alive.

Where the buck was bedded, there was blood not 5' on the same trail....none on the ground but in on a stem off the ground. There was no blood from that point to the bed, past the bed, or anywhere else beyond the bed.
Rob, I am not accusing you of not putting 100% effort into finding your deer, but I can onlyoffer advicefrom your own words. I also have been hunting for a bit, and have had the fortune to have bloodtrailed more than a few deer. The 1 point that really throws flags up, and trust me I have seen this in the field! is how can a deer leave a drop of blood 5' from from a bed your friend thinks he saw the buck, but not leave 1 single drop in that bed? In my experience, that means that the deer with 2 holes, as you had a complete pass through, was probably hit real high and didn't bed down. If they bed, the tilting of the deer will leave a drop on the ground side. (he was dropping blood just 5' back) I am NOT saying that deer may not be alive still, as I agree that deer are tough animals and can survive an off shot, but I think your deer probably kept walking. I have trailed deer hit similarly to yours (from your description) and have had blood trails of 1/4 to 1/2 mile before finding the deer or their first bed. I also disagree with your point that the arrow could not provide new and helpful information. Finding the arrow is crucial, in my opinion.

I feel for you that the deer is lost, but 2 other things that you may have done or what others in your shoes could do is come back around midnight and listen for coyotes, and look for the turkey vultures/crows a day or 2 later. Not seeing/hearing anything can sometimes ease the guilt a bit. Good luck with the rest of your season, and I do believe you put honest effort into finding the deer.

Rob, maybe you mentioned it, but what was the shot angle? You mentioned the deer was walking at you.

A lot of people get on my case, but I am a believer in going after a muscle hit, or single lung hit (not a combination liver) right away. John Trout's books are the best source of info IMO.

Yes, I am thoroughly disappointed but I know I did everything right before, during and after the shot
Obviously not, you didn't recover the animal so something was wrong. Tough break.
I wouldn't expect less out of you. Nothing went wrong from my shot execution to the recovery attempt. The animal is alive because his keen reaction to the shot. I don't care how fast your bow is or how good you think you are at shooting because my shot was on the mark, my arrow replaced my pin but the deer dropped and turned to hightail it out of there so

PLEASE....explain to me where I went wrong....besides posting this here for the likes of those who just find it necessary to flame....hmmm
