do you bend the rules? what is immoral?
do you nock an arrow before sunrise? is your flashlight too powerful?? how ethical are you personally?? we have a law saying you cant use a more than 2 aa battery flashlight, now if you lost it would you use a bigger one or no light?? its not like you can hold the bow and shoot and your not poching so would that be a sin?? if its 3 minutes after sunset and a huge 8 appears do you take the shot if you know you can take it?? and how many people do these things but dont include them in there story?? do you bait deer into your yard w/ apples or feed when not allowed too?? this year all feeding of deer is banned in ny for concerns of cronic waste but agway still sells it all day?? is that ethical?? or is the sport in abiding by every rule and every law,,, i go by these things and dont have alot of sucess to show for it but feel eventually it will payoff,,,,, but what about all those cheaters?? im in a bow only zone and this guy took the biggest 12 point w/ a rifle after the season while feeding them!! is he proud when he looks at it on his wall?? i wouldnt be!!

You know, there are some things that I feel are dumb rules. In your case, a certain size flashlight. Thats funny. How close do you suppose you are going to get to a deer in the dark shining a photon beam on him, regardless of size?
I hunt by the rules, mostly. Here in PA, the rules arent as strict on "dumb" things though. One thing I don't do, is wear orange like archers are required to while moving here. I hunt on over 600 acres of private ground that is virtually inaccesable and watched closely. Everyone here hunts smart and its not a problem. I know I should be wearing it, but I dont feel its unethical in any way.
Other than that, I play by the rules. I feel I owe the deer I hunt that. I have a lot of respect for the wildlife I pursue and want to give them a fair playing field as well.
Some things though, like baiting, even if it was legal here, I wouldn't do it. Just doesn't seem right to me.

Personally, if it was three minutes after sunset, and the shot presented itself. I'd take it. I would carry no shame either, even if it was ten or fifteen minutes after sunset. Reason is in Ohio hunting hours for bow season are half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. If it was just a few minutes after legal hunting hours, I don't know. I doubt I would though because by time legal hunting hours elapse I'd probably feel it's too dark too shoot. I don't actually break the rules, I think I may have bent one once. In Ohio we're not supposed to trim branches on state lands. Well one day there was a small sapling with a branch in my way. I didn't break it off, but I did bend it and hang it up in some other branches so it wan't in my way. The pun isn't intended, and it really happened <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>. If I've actualy broken a game law, then I'm unaware of it.
God bless,

What is illegal isn't necessarily unethical and what is legal isn't necessarily ethical....
Ethics comes from within, no one can tell another that he or she is unethical tho alot of us try. It's a personal thing. All we can do is stay as closely within the confines of the law that we can and treat the animal you hunt with the respect it deserves.
What I or you do in the woods may only be seen by you or I, what you do when no one else is watching defines who you are so think who you want to be or what someone else would think of you if you were seen and do the best you can.....WWJD

In my state a half hour before and after sunrise and set means it's too dark to see the bow let alone the sights. The flashlight thing must mean a spotlight for jack lighting and wouldn't even cross my mind. We can't bait anything but fish and I wouldn't anyway but you can have at it if it's legal. Good hunting.
