Deer cane--use during season?
I was given some Deer cane by one of the members here, but I've never used it. I don't want to make the deer suspicious by introducing something into their area that betrays my presence. However, I think it could have some potential.
Any opinions from those who have used it?

Great product. Works very well provided you follow their instructions on location and soil type. However, to use it during the season in my neck of the woods would be illegal as it is basically considered bait.
I don't think the deer would associate you with it provided you didn't hunt it immediately after you put it out. It basically takes water to activate and this has been one dry year here.

hey dave, i hunt harford county myself even though i live in pa. iv used the stuff and it seemed to work well when i used in on a stump. this year im trying out the buck jam that walmart sells. seems like it is attracting deer from the holes they are digging in the ground. tommorrow i plan on putting out about 300 lbs. of eared corn and ill pour a jug on that and see if it works. im hoping to hunt the area next week.

It works great for me early in the year but they seem to forget about it about the middle of September.I'm in southwest Virginia so maybe it is a regonal thing?

I believe the ingredients are mostly sodium and sodium chloride ( table salt) with a pinch of a few other minerals. You could probably make your own for a fraction of what you pay for the fancy bag and all. But the minerals are something the bucks crave when they are growing their head gear and not so much after........dabow

It would be to late at this point in the season to bother introducing a mineral lick. That's all it is.... it's by NO means a serious attractant or "bait". This product would have been used by the deer over the last few months but their body simply doesn't really need the salt at this point. As the availablityt as other foods and their moisture content increases the animals find that they no longer need salt mineral. If you pour it out now you'll find that the animals won't really use it until March or so.

I have an established Deercane mineral sight on my lease and have noticed a distinct drop off in activity around it as the year has gone on. I guess once they get that big head or the fawns are weaned they just don't require as many minerals. I would save it until spring or right after the season and start a new mineral spot.
