Default Different Opening day Success

Well I am just making it back from the Texas bow opening
weekend. As normal it was really HOT!!!!. Opening morning
started out with a young 4 point at day break, followed by
4 does with all but 1 having there fawns. Not be able to
shoot a doe with her fawn,(just does not seem right), the
morning hunt ended with no arrows flying. Opening night was
pretty much the same, a couple does with there fawns, and a
couple of really nice young bucks, one a 4 point and one a
small eight. I thought the hunt was over but right before
dark the buck I was looking for stepped out at about 50 yards,
he was a awesome 10 point the would probably score some where
around 130 P&Y, as I waited for the buck to come into range it
was slowly getting to dark to see, the closest he came was 45
yards from me and I decided to pass on what would have been a
pretty lucky shot, normaly try to make the shot inside of 40.
So even though I came home empty handed, I left my stand late
into the night so I would not spook the buck and decided to go
back after him next weekend.

See....if your absolutely sure he was 50yrds you could have taken him with your 50yrd pin(if you have one like I do). but if you couldn't see him very well, or wasn't sure of the shot, I wouldn't have taken it either. But see....having and practicing with a 50yrd pin can really come in handy in some situations.

Why would you shoot 50 yards out Hich Country? Thats a heck of a distance to wound a deer. Congrats to you for not taking a shot that you were unsure of. Just get him next time. Maybe move a little closer.

If your sure of the shot, and sure of your equipment, why not take it? I mean seriously? If you've practiced it, and you are confident in your ability...why not?

Hey HighCountry_BruteForce, for your information I do have a
50 yard pin, and practice it all the time in my back yard, and
consider myself a really good shot. However that does not mean
that you take every shot in the wild. It is important to make
sure of your shot so the animal will die as quick as possible.
You should remember that the next time your in the wild and you are
presented with a 50 yard shot.

I will shoot targets out to 50 yds. With confidence and hit the kill zone.Bow hunting to ME is more how close can i get to the game for a shot. Not how far of a shot i can take on game. The longer that arrow is in the air the more can happen.I would rather pass on a 50 yd shot. And wait till the next time around.Maybe Texas Hunter will get a chance at a big buck in the proccess.

It's not how big the Deer,But the size of the experiance that matters!!

This distance thing is really getting aggravating. I keep getting hassled over it and it's not that big of a deal.

I never said you had to take that shot, I said if you was comfortable with the shot, and could see the deer plainly, I would take the shot. I like the closer shot's too. And for the 500th time, I have never shot over 40yrds at a deer. But like I've said for the 500th time...I would take a 50yrd shot if the situation was right. So once again, it's whatever your preference is. If your comfortable, 50yrds is nothing. If your not, then you don't shoot it. It's as simple as that.

Your weekend sounds like mine TH. I'll call you tomorrow and give you the details. I didn't kill anything but had an incredible weekend none the less. I just wish I would have at least taken a camera. BTW, Scent-Lok rules!

Sounds like my first encounter this year with deer. I had three does and a buck 45 yards away, feeding broadside. I just didn't feel comfortable at that distance, and passed. So far they haven't came closer, but hopefully they'll make a mistake. Good luck to you.
