I don't think the "50 yard thing" is a comfort thing or a confidence thing. I feel confident I can hit a target the size of a deers vital areas about 8 times out of ten at 50 yards. The problem is that at 50 yards the deer has so much time to react that your odds are actually pretty low on making a good clean kill shot. The target you are aiming for can shift dramatically in the time it takes the arrow to travel 50 yards, even with the fastest bows on the market.
I personally would never take a 50 yard shot and would probably frown at anybody who told me they did.
