Nope no shot, I can make 50 yard shots all day, but simply would not risk wounding a animal. ALERTED DEER at 40 yards hard 1/4 no way I would shoot....he will hear your bow and move, but how much who knows...still no shot....

i have only one pin set at about 27 yards. i can hold on the spot and still hit with in 4 to 6 inchesat 25 and 35 but 40 is just tofar out.
so no i would not shoot.
we mess around a lot at 40 and 50 yards for fun.but thats just that messing around.

40 yards is beyond my cozy zone.
I'd actually highly consider passing at him inside 30 with the scenario you described. Like someone else said, anything can happen at any second with a buck on high alert. I'd let him be 5 years old next season.

40 yards at a sharply quartering animal and then add to the fact that you know he is on alert..... NO WAY! He certainly won't be there by the time the arrow arrives!

At 40yrds and he's ready for ya ,not a chance .At that time of night and he's 40yrds away and he's already detected you ,as soon as he hear's you hit the trigger he's gone ,you might hit him ,but chance's are if you even hit him that you'll only wound him .I say don't take the shot ,but now if he's 20yrds away I'll take it .But let him calm down a bit .
