Ram, I started bow hunting a few years ago, and have always chewed when on the stand. Really don't think it affects things much. Took a doe last year at 8 yds. Then again, maybe I could be seeing more deer if I wasn't chewing?!! Just my 2 cents.

i think the temperature factors in. ive been winded only a few times and it is always in warm weather which could have some sense.
maybe im nutz, but i think they can smell better in warm weather than in the cold. ever notice how a dirty car smells fine on a fourty five degree morning when you get in but stinks when its seventy degrees when you comehome from work? aLSO, I chew and have not been winded due to it. including last weekend when there were 6 deer within 5 yards and downwind.

If you can make it thru a hunt without chewing it would probably be best. I chew, and I'm not sure if it effects deer winding me, but I know for sure that it doesn't help. You have to way out the consequences, getting winded by deer, or having withdrawl symptons twenty feet up in a tree.

I can only go by my own experiences while hunting on this one. I have bowhunted for 29 seasons now, this one will be number 30. For the first 12 seasons I would not chew until I was out of the woods, for fear of it spooking deer. About 17 years ago, I had already tagged out on a nice buck, so I was doe hunting and thought, heck with it and put a cheekful of beechnut in. I had deer all around me that day, and they never reacted to the chew. Well, 17 years later, with over 50 more big game kills, including three record book whitetails, I have had a chew in for every one of them! And I do spit the juice all over the ground. Maybe I am just lucky, I don`t know.

I think if they can smell you smoking or chewing, they can smell you with nothing in your mouth. The best way is hunt the wind. I know guys who pee in bottles and spit their chew in pop bottles corking it everytime while on stand. However i have a buddy who has killed some great animals and he just hawks it where it lies...so I am not sure it really matters, if you use the wind in your favour.
