I shot a buck at 40+ last year and hit it good, but I would only take that shot at a large chested animal.

motownhonkey, do u know what arrow speed u have at 40 yards?
270 fps.....thats fast right? well do u know what speed a whitetail has as a reaction time?
....
....
....
1100 fps. so i don't care what bow u shoot a wt can always move before your arrow gets 120 feet!
i am not saying i have not shot 40 yards or saying it is bad, just understand a deer can and will move faster than your arrow can shoot!

I wouldn't shoot past 25-30 yards right now. And before you ask Data, even if a 180' der was standing at 32.1 yards away I wouldn't shoot right now. Why? For one, I am really not into horns right now and I would rather not gut shot or clip any animal. For 2, I am just not that good of a shot out at 30+ yards and my range estimation is not great at best. I tend to overestimate how far things are away so if I thought a deer was over 30 yards away, I just wouldn't shoot. Could I hit it at 35 or even 40 yards? Well with the Stealth shooting pretty much flat out to 30 yards, yeah, and in the killzone but I don't TRUST myself enough in that moment with the adrenaline pumping , the muscles stiff and cold from sitting/standing all day. It would make me sick to clip any animal out that far when I knew in my heart and my head that it wasn't a smart shot for me to take.

Well, I had a monster Kansas 10 pointer at about 45-50 yards last year and I actually was pretty calm because I'd been watching him for maybe 5 minutes. He was 10-15 yards from getting an arrow through the lung toos, and he never knewit.Very brushy creek draw he was in, no way I could get a shot where he stood. That buck lived ....... he'll be a 200" buck this year and I get to hunt him !! (thats my horn porn kicking in )

IL Rancher - My point is, in the woods, you don't really ever try and calculate if a deer is +/- a yard of your personal effective range. You see a deer, decide to shoot and when then moment feels right, you take the shot knowing you can make it. That isn't a hard line of 25 yards max, or 35 yards max - its bowhunting, its taking a shot when you feel you can make it.

HNIJustin - would you take a million.1 shot ? And until you drop the the training wheels, your bow DOES NOT kick my bows tail Shoot a real bow this weekend and be humbled [&:]

Iknow but it doesn't matter. Whatever the distance is.... it's MY distance. Yours probably is or should be entirely different. No way do I think I should impose my standards on anyone else. It might handicap them or exceed their practical limits. Those limits are not only distance but also moral and ethical... which is again different than mine. To me a deer is a deer .... to some they're Gods... to others they're targets.... to others they're pests. We have to decide and calulate our own limitations. Those limitations will change with time, conditions, etc. And as the man said, "A man's got to know his limitations".[8D]
