I hunt my own land(48acres) about 10 days a year,
my land is 350 miles away
so i also hunt public land closer to home,
have found great hunting on public lands,
there are days i avoid, such as opening days on weekends,
but weekdays, cold/wet weather, or late season is usually just fine,

Most ( 99 % ) of my hunting is on Public land , I live and hunt in NC but I do make a trip to Ohio every Nov. to bowhunt and it is on public land as well , I took a 147 2/8 P&Y there in 2003 not too bad for public land huh ....

Always hunted Public land in Upper Michigan, my dad has pulled a couple nice 8 pointers out of there. Not much hunting pressure so its like owning private land.

I hunt public land more often than private. The hunting is harder. But I still manage to see Pope &Young and Boone & Crockett bucks every year. I prefer hunting large marsh's in Wisc. and swamps. Areas where the gun hunters can't effectively drive and kill everything before it gets old enough to grow a rack. I glass and spotlight ( Leagle in Wisc.) the feilds surrounding the propertys all summer and locate the preffered feeding grounds of the best bucks. During the winter I locate there bedding areas and good spots to hang a stand where they stage after leaveing the bedding area. I do my best on the public land the 1st couple weeks of the season. Last year, I blew two opertunitys at great bucks, and ended up taking 4 "OK" bucks on public, two with gun, two with bow.
all within the CWD no limet areas. I passed on all the 1 1/2 year old bucks and only took 2 1/2 or older. Normally I hold out for mature bucks, but the wonderfull DNR is killing our herd with no limet, so I decided to drop my standards this year and have a little fun on the public land.

i hunt public 99.9% of the time.. i do okay, the past 4 years has been pretty bad though... i also run into a ton of hunters, no matter how far and deep into the woods i go.. hunters everywhere.. i really need my own land..
