RE: 45/vs 50 caliber inlines
Sidelocks are widely available in all/or most calibers up to .58+.
Most In-lines are .50 cal, although there are a few in .45 and .54 with Knight offering a .52 custom.
Target or hunting or both and for what?
Before you read any further, I would offer that I would rather have a higher quality rifle in a lesser popular caliber than a low quality rifle in the most popular caliber.
45 pro's
-More accurate for long range silhouette shooting.
-Easier to work up a small game load.
-Less recoil.
-Less popular, which means that great deals can be often found on quality rifles.
45 con's
-Less popular, but .45 is not going away.
-Considered the minimum for large game, although the 45 with a 350-450+ grain conical will do just about anything one would want in North America.
-Considered too small by some states for big game (Elk and so on).
-Less availability of rifles, projectile and accessory availability.
50 pro's
-Most popular.
-Widest range of projectiles and loading combinations.
-Widest variety of available rifles and accessories.
-Considered the minimum by some states for big game
50 con's
-None really as it's the most popular, other than the "It's got to be a .50 or it's not good" fluff
54 pro's
-Among the best in terms of ballistics.
-Considered by many to be the benchmark for big or dangerous game
-Less popular, which means that great deals can be often found on quality rifles.
54 con's
-Less popular, but .54 is not going away.
-Less availability of rifles, projectiles and accessory availability.
-Considered effective range load out to 125-150yards max.

Buy the gun and you will not be dissapointed. I have shot 45 for about 30 years,(before B/P was popular) and have never had a problem.
I have always been able to get all the Powder and projectiles I have ever needed.
the only drwaback on the 45 is you can't take it west for elk.(state rules) that is the only drawback I know of.all the rest of the hype for the 50 is just that hype. the 45 will do all that is needed for anything except the larger game like elk and moose.
I know a guy that I worked with that has shot a 40 cal for 35 years and has done real well. he makes sure of his shot placement.that is what it's all about anyway (SHOTPLACEMENT RULES)[8D].
I have taken many, many, many, deer and lots of Hogs up to and including 354lbs.
"A lot of people will disagree with me on that ; but they are wrong"

RE: 45/vs 50 caliber inlines
Other then the fact many states do not allow them to be used for large game like elk, moose, and bear I think for Whitetail and coyotes, etc., it will do just fine. As for the quality of the rifle you could not pick better. If I had the deal before me I would really have to think about it (I just do not need another inline)....
More and more stores are stocking .45 caliber projectiles. Also as far as one line purchase it is easy to obtain many different projectiles now. The only reason I could see turning it down is if you really have the black powder rifle part pf your life covered and just do not need another inline.....

I will agree that the 50cal. is the most popular, and yes the hype put
forth by the owners & builders of 50cal ML's is just that hype. I have just purchased a 45cal ML. Last weekend shot about 35 times.
Used 2-50gr. 777 pellets and the 195gr powerbelt. Accuracy was
unbelievable flat shooting to 100-125yds. 3" groups and the power-
belt had to be screaming at muzzle. So I wouldn't sell the 45 short
I believe it will do great on whitetail, but will need to up the ante to
225gr. powerbelt. Sounds like agreat deal I don't think you would be
dissappointed with the 45.
