T/C Firestorm, 209/1:28
Well, I've finally been heating up my new Thompson/Center Firestorm 50Cal in 209 primer/ 1:28 twist.
Granted the Firestorm 209 is truly an oddball. But I found an excellent deal on NIB.
For those that don't know, the T/C Firestorm is a .50 caliber sidelock rifle in T/C New Englander pattern, with synthetic stock, removable breech plug and either 209 ignition/1:28 twist or Flintlock/1:48 twist. The breech plug design of the Firestorm is also supposed to assist with the use of pellets. But I've yet to try any pellets.
It is also not a new design and the 209 versions have been discontinued for 2005.
What an excellent shooting and handing rifle! It's also very well built! Trigger is at 5 pounds. Heavier than I like but it should lighten up with more shooting.
Takedown and cleaning is easy, just pull the wedge pin and the barrel is out.
Cleaning the barrel is a snap as you simply remove the breech plug.
The Firestorm 209 has a "primer hub" that requires disassembly and cleaning but it's also easy.
The Firestorm is certainly not for everyone. But some great deals may be showing up on this rifle
But it is a very well made rifle and the 1:28 Twist barrel give the option of shooting sabot rounds and the 209 ignition is flawless.
Over the past few weeks I've been working on various loads. I have not tried any pellets yet but will shoot some 777 pellets eventually.
The most accurate loads from 50 yard bench I came up with for the Firestorm 209 were:
Large Game (Loose Powder)
Sabot=300gr Hornady SST (Black Mag'3= 105gr)(Goex 3F= 125gr)
Conical=410gr Hornady HB-SP (Ox-Yoke .50 cal Felt Wonderwad) (Black Mag'3= 95gr)(Goex 3F= 100gr)
Conical=350gr T/C Maxi Hunter (Ox-Yoke .50 cal Felt Wonderwad) (Black Mag'3= 105gr)(Goex 3F= 115gr)
Small Game/ Fun Target (Loose Powder)
Roundball=175gr .049 Hornady Ball (Ox-Yoke .50 cal Felt Wonderwad & .018 Pillow ticking patch, Lubed with T/C Bore butter) (Black Mag'3= 40gr)(Goex 3F= 55gr)
