Just a quickie. By the way Cayugad I have your explanation of the 15% extra oomph that 777 has printed and in my BP bag with my other paperwork manuals etc. Does the 777 50 grain pellets actually add up to a 57.5 grain equivalent. The thought presented itself to my when reading the very depressing BPs blowing up thread. I would guess some might be using 3 - 50 gr 777 pellets in the 150 rated inlines. Would that be equal to 172.5 gr of loose BP. Pushing the envelope here???

I used 777 pellets in my T/C Omega this year. I called T/C and asked about using 3 50 gr. pellets and they did not recommend it. I used 2 50 gr. pellets and a 250 gr. Shockwave sabot with very good results.

striper, no, a 777 50cal pellet is the same as a pyrodex 50cal 50gr equil pellet.

I would go with your manufactures suggested loads. Knight has no problem with 3 777 pellets as T/C does.

I use 3 777 pellets with 250gr barnes expander and magnum subbase with sub2.5MOA accuracy. Can't beat that. But it took alot of testing and sabots and bullet combos for me to find an accurate combo.

I tried dead center 240gr, 200gr, 250gr SST, 300gr SST, 200gr XTP, 240gr XTP, 250gr XTP Mag, and finally powerbelts. Along with MMP and harvester sabots.

Oh well, it was fun.

As BC as stated the pellets are equal to Pyrodex in terms of charge. The additonal 15% your refering to is for loose 777 only.

Personally I have never been able to get the accuracy using max or close to max charges with my rem 700. When using pellets I always just stuck with 100 gr (2 x 50's) as it seem to provide both accuracy and trajectory I required.

If your 50 cal rifle is rated for 150grain MAX load of black powder:

The 777 pellets are already "reduced" by 15%.
Example: 50 grain 777 pellet is supposed to be equivelant to 42.5 grains of black powder.
2x50gr 777 pellets are about 85gr equivelant to black powder.
3x50gr 777 pellets are about 127.5gr equivelant to black powder volume.

15% less than 150gr black powder loading is 127.5 grains.

Not all rifles will pattern accurately with substitue loads greater than 120gr and your max 777 substitute load is 127.5 gr with 3-50gr pellets.

Some rifles shoot great with 3-50gr 777 pellets. Most shoot very well with 2-50gr 777 pellets.
A good patch and roundball load for target fun and small game is a single pellet or about 40-60gr loose 777.

When measuring loose 777. Your max load in a rifle rated for 150gr black powder is 127.5 gr 777.

One thing I might mention with the use of pellets. Although many MAGNUM rifles are rated for 150 grains of powder, read your manual. In my CVA Staghorn Magnum rifle, it is rated for 150 grains of PELLETS. If you were going to shoot loose powder the rating ability drops to 100 grains of Pyrodex or Black Powder or their equivlant. This is for a .50 caliber. The .54 caliber is rated for 120 grains of loose powder. Therefore loose Triple Se7en would be in the 85 grain rating for this rifle.

My Thompson Center Black Diamond XR on the other hand will accept 150 grains of powder. My Wolverine II is not a magnum rifle because it is rated for 120 grains of powder.

I want to stress, please READ YOUR MANUAL. I can not stress that enough. I made the mistake of not reading the manual on the CVA Staghorn when I first got it. I guess having a lot of experience with muzzleloaders at the time, I thought it was a waste of my time. I was loading 100 grains of loose Triple Se7en. This would have been in violation of their recommendations. My mistake was pointed out by another poster to which I was grateful. I then read the manual twice. I guess I was not as smart as I thought.

They may have since changed that 85 grain limit of Triple Se7en to 100 grains of loose, I believe I read in another post. Yet, since I was never told that by CVA I have never done it. I shoot Goex out of the rifle instead. I just feel safer shooting Goex then any other powder.

You know I got a dilemma right now. I got a power stem breech plug for my knight elite disc cause I would like to keep my perfromance but get away from pellets.

I called knight about it, cause they shoot 150gr loose 777 in their 52 caliber. I have called three times. Two of the calls, the guys said oh yea, go ahead and fire 150gr. It will handle it just fine. One guy said don't go above 125gr. I think I am going to heed the last guys advise of 125 cause I only want to match my 3 777 pellet performance. It just concerns me that they had a few different approaches.

Always, follow with the manual for your particular rifle.
If you don't have a manual, contact the manufacturer and they should send you one.

FYI

I just talked to TC today regarding the use of 3-50g 777 pellets in my Encore. Was told it would be OK. Figured the Omega would be very much the same.
