1st buck w/ black powder
I'm kind of new to these forums, but I thought I'd share a picture of my first buck (Axis) shot with black powder. Even after a month, I'm still stoked about it.
This buck was shot Saturday, November 6th, 2004 on the Cooper-Maxwell Ranch in Leakey, Texas along the Frio River. I was shooting a Lyman Great Plains .50 cal (patch & ball) rifle with open sites. The buck was shot at about 90 yards with 70 grains of Elephant FFF powder. He weighed in at 190 lbs. on the hoof. The rack is 29” from base to tip and about 25” wide. This was the 2nd largest Axis pulled off this ranch.

RE: !st buck w/ black powder
Nothing like the first BP deer, buck or doe. My first kills with a flinter were last year. I was prouder of the two does than I was of the 140 buck taken with a cartridge rifle! Patched round ball and BP RULE! Now my goal is to take a deer with my 20 bore flint fowler.

RE: 1st buck w/ black powder
Haven't been the same since I shot my first deer (doe) ever (my whole life) with a BP rifle! That was about 5 years ago. This buck was actually my 2nd deer with BP.
But I have shot competitively with black powder for a few years now. Nothing like the smell of black powder in the morning!
