blackpowder?
whats the difference in ffg or fffg powders. i am currently using pyrodex pellets but i want to load 90 grains and i can't get that with pellets. i use a cva hunter mag 50 cal inline nand shoots decent with hundred grains but i was told would get better groups with loose powder and 90 grains. if this is true which powder should i use?

RE: blackpowder?
I could be mistaken but, if I remember correctly, doesn't pyrodex come in 30 gr pellets also? 3 pellets of 30 gr each equals 90 gr. I do think loose is better though.

you are correct livbuks, i have tried 90gr with pellets but 100 is easier to find, but they do make 30 gr pellets. but if you want to shoot loose powder
fff would be what you need, btw you can get pyrodex that is equivlent to fff, and it works good..
best of luck

The only guy that can tell you what will shoot best in your gun is the previous owner. If there is no previous owner, then it's up to you to find the best load, or at least one that will meet your requirements.
Lose the pellets if you want to work a load up in increments of say 5 grains. If you aren't into that, go with a combination of 50 and/or 30 gr pellets and be done with it. Find a projectile that your gun likes.
As for ff and fff, that refers to grain size. fff is finer than ff. In a 50 cal. ff works just fine, though fff can be used. Generally speaking, a given volume of fff will produce equal pressure to a slightly greater volume of ff. I don't know the exact difference, and I'm sure it varies between mfr's.

Both Pyrodex & 777 make 30-grain pellets.
FFF & Pyrodex P are finer, cleaner burning, more potent grains that you generally need to reduce at least 5% in your powder measures.
Your CVA may need a different bullet to shoot better... it may need JB Bore Compound to remove the grit - it may need a box or two of full-fledged conicals to smooth out any burrs in your rifling that plastic sabots cannot do. I would try all three if I were you along with buying 777 FFF loose powder.
