RE: What to expect using a minimal powder load?
I have the same situation with my wife. At the range this past weekend I sighted in a T/C White Mountain Carbine 50 cal with 320 gr REAL bullets and 70 gr pyrodex. It shot very well at 50. Where I'll hunt with her, that will be about as far as she will shoot. I know the load has enough power, and the recoil is manageable, but not what I would call light.
If a person is recoil sensitive, I would recommend a moderate load, and installation of a limbsaver recoil pad. They have slip-on models too. They are supposed to cut recoil by 50%.

When I shoot my side lock with round balls I never go beyond 80 grains for deer hunting. Thats with a fifty caliber. I often use 50 grains for small game. With the 50 grain pellets I never use more than two. Thats with a 300 grain Hornady XTP bullet. This will shoot through a mule deer(big one). at 200 yards +. Including the far shoulder. Three pellets is one hell of an overkill on deer. No need for the recoil and blast of three pellets. Even on Elk.

I know your situation all to well, I will help guide you through making a specialty BP loading that should have plenty of power to take down a deer up to 100 yards which uses only one 50 grain Pyrodex pellet keeping the lightest recoil possible in mind. you will need to get some .50 caliber/.430 diameter bullet harvester sabots, these are the sabots only no bullets, you will also need 44 caliber/.430 diameter pistol bullets, I recommend the Hornady 180 or 200 grain HP/XTP since they are designed for the 44 special and have the best performance at lower velocity between 700 and 1200 fps. I figure this loading in a 22 to 26 inch barrel should have a muzzle velocity between 1200 and 1400 fps which would be the approximate equivalence to the power of a 44 special or 45 long colt shot from a 20 inch barrel, I think that will be plenty of power to take a deer to 50 or 60 yards and with good shot placement even a 100 yard kill is possible. I hope this helps

Brother-in-law had a .50 double barrel that he shot a 50 gr. charge out of. The last deer he shot was a neck shot on a doe. Dropped like lightning struck her. I have 3 loads that shoot well through my Lyman Great Plains Hunter, 80grs. of Swiss ffg behind a 325gr. REAL bullet, 70grs. of Swiss ffg with patched round ball and 25grs. of Goex ffg with patched ball for small game. This load is real accurate with no recoil whatsoever.
