Save up some extra money and buy a Ruger "Old Army". They come Blued or stainless. With adjustable or fixed sights. I think most of the Cabela's are Italian made.Ruger Redhawk

propmahn,
Actually, my gun is a CVA model.
However, a buddy bought the Cabela's model (which is marketed by Traditions) and low & behold - both are actually made by di Pietta in Italy and are vitually identical (except that he got the stainless model).
These shoot OK and can be used for close range hunting - but to be honest, it's far from be a "tack driver". I'm hoping that with more rounds through it, the barrel will "season" and the groups will shrink - I guess time will tell.
And even if it doesn't improve much in accuracy - they are still a BLAST to go play with! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I have had 3-- 2 1860 colt army copeys. the first one was scrached up during shiping and the wedge would not come out. the replacmet they sent me had some problems with the hammer spring. It shot well at first then the hamer lacked enought force to bust the #11cap. i sent it back and had them send a rem 1858 copey i have shot the rem copey more than 100 times. with the bufflo bore conicals and balls. Mine is more acite with the bbc 180gr than it is with the balls. i can keep a coffey can rolling with 5 shots "all i load in a cilender' And i can keep 5 shots on a 6in pie plate at 25 yd off hand. i love it it has become one of my favorit shoting guns I all so carry it when i am bp hunting.----one of my finds has the 1851 colt copey brass framed 44 he likes it he has not shotit as much as i have mine but he shotit enought to see that he liked it. He is thinkng of buying a 1851steal framed in 36cal or a walker modle from them now.. I agree that the ruger is a better gun but it also has a much biger price. I may endup geting a ruger later on but ight know i am happy with the rem copey.

I bought the 1858 Remington (steel frame) in .44 caliber. Not a tack driver, for sure, but what one of those black powder repros is? Fun gun to shoot, even though it gets a little messy. Good luck.

well I am one of the lucky people to actually have been to the cabelas store in Dundee michigan and man is is ever cool! I spent a full afternoon and evening there and still didn't get to see everything there is to see in that place. Any way I went off there. I did handle every single one of thier blackpowder pistols and was very much impressed with most of them. I dont like thier brass framed models and would not reccomend them and the impressive thing was that the guy at the gun counter actually told me to steer clear of the ones with brass frames. I really know now that cabelas cares about the wellbeing of thier customers.
